VIA-owned S3 graphics has seen its popularity wane in the shadow of NVIDIA and ATI. But they are not out of the game yet and have recently unveiled their own general purpose GPU technology (GPGPU) but for a slightly targeted usage model.
The company has released a photo-enhancing program called S3FotoPro, intended for photo-editing based on various algorithms. When used with an S3 GPU, the program can perform some GPGPU accelerations.
You can download the S3FotoPro program here. This photo-editor was released to show off the prowess of their re-designed Chrome general purpose programmable shader architecture, in their DirectX 10.1 Chrome 400-series chips.
S3 claims to produce a high-performance computing scenario where S3 graphics' GPGPU technology can be used for general purpose tasks such as HD video transcoding/encoding, engineering, medical/scientific purposes, geospatial imaging, and many other areas.
Slowly but surely, the GPGPU market is picking up steam with more solutions being offered by the likes of ATI and NVIDIA. In this as-yet nascent market, the efforts of S3 might see some traction. Would you buy the S3 Chrome 400 series cards if they're available in India?
