Yeah, you read it right. In an interview with Silicon Republic, Christian Sejersen, mobile director of engineering for Mozilla spilled the beans about the much-awaited Firefox Mobile (codenamed Fennec) not coming to the iPhone or Android platform.
He cleared the speculation by saying that Firefox on Android is not the thing the developers are looking at in the near future and even for iPhone - it was a straight no. He cited couple of reasons for not developing the browser for iPhone. Firstly, Apple's policy does not allow a developer to replicate the functionality of an application which Apple already provides and secondly, the license terms restrict any apps to run a code in the background.
The alpha version of Firefox Mobile is due to hit sometime this week for Nokia's N810 device which runs on Linux. Choosing a Linux-based device comes with its own advantages. The Nokia N810 is open to APIs and Mozilla can fully utilize its touchscreen interface for their product. After the N810 launch, Fennec is expected to be available for Windows Mobile 6 and QT 4.4 platform.
