Windows 7 is the official name given by Microsoft to its upcoming operating system.
Mike Nash, corporate vice president, Windows product management group for Microsoft, posted on Windows Vista blog about the official announcements on the upcoming Windows 7 beta release.
Earlier, Microsoft had released Windows operating system based on their logical Windows 3.1 - version numbers. Later they went off track and started naming Windows with year of release - Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millenium 2000. That too didn't work and finally they came up with some out of the world names like Windows XP and Vista. However, with the next major operating system they're sticking to their first naming strategy - Windows 7.
Interesting story lies also about their code names where Windows 95 had Chicago, Windows 98 had Memphis, Windows XP carried code name Whistler and Windows Vista was codenamed Longhorn. This is the first time that a codename has been adopted as the official name.
But does the name really matter? No, it's the operating system's performance and features that will matter the most. Let's wait for what Microsoft has in store.
windows 7 - u have to use it to believe it! i run xp-sp3 and vista-sp1 on a compaq laptop - v3070tu... its superb on the xp. but xp is coming of age - been using it since 2003. and vista - well it lacks the punch for vista - blame the processor. so i signed up for the windows 7 30 days trial. installed in multi boot in under 30 mins. runs almost as quick as xp & very refreshing n better than vista.
