We know that the Tata's have pioneered the concept of future cars being powered by compressed air. However, we doubt how much progress they might have made in this front over the past few months thanks to the Singur fallout, which apart from affecting the arrival of the Nano could affect some of Tata s future plans. That however is not the bone of contention here.
I am talking about the new air powered car designed by MDI a company which has been in the air compression industry for over 20 years. The car, christened Airpod, looks whacky and seems to come from an unknown era with its bulbous looks and round windows.
Expected to start its commercial run by next year, the AirPod houses an electric pump which pumps in compressed air to many tanks inside the car which in turn help drive the pistons that help move the car. Currently, the AirPod claims a top speed of 40 miles per hour and will run for a mere 130 miles before you head to the pump house to refill the air.
Capable of seating three people comfortably, the AirPod will strictly remain an intracity car for commuters with an eco-conscience.
Sweet! Me like-ie ... only thing is the cars that are so called eco-freindly in more in that one instance are not Pocket-book friendly and leave the buyer thinking why they didn't just save a dollar more and by a Honda Fit.
"...and will run for a mere 130 miles before you head to the pump house to refill the air..."
Thats more than 200 kilometers.
What, not enough for a full tank run of just AIR ?!
