Software can be downloaded straight to the SD card

One of the most irritating aspects of the Nintendo Wii is its lack of internal storage space: the console only offers a miserly 512MB of Flash memory. What makes matters worse is that the console does support expansion via SD cards but you cannot play games from said external storage. Needless to say, the result is an exercise in frustration: you either copy to internal memory, then delete to make space (a process that takes a looooong time); or you delete the game and re-download (a process that takes an equally loooong time).

Well, the frustration will be somewhat alleviated with this announcement from Nintendo during its Japan conference this morning: you can now download software directly to the SD memory card. It will also be possible to easily move things from SD card to the Wii memory. That's the good news. The bad news is that this feature will only start from spring 2009.
