    Tata Indicom Blackberry 8830

Frazier Barretto, Oct 01, 2008 1700 hrs IST

Today we take a look at the Blackberry 8830 from Tata Indicom, which seems to be just a CDMA-based version of the Blackberry 8800.

Great e-mailing device, PEARL Navigation, Stylish, QWERTY keypad, Memory Card Slot (hot swappable).

No Camera, Mono-handsfree, Battery Life, No Wi-Fi, Expensive compared to it's GSM variant.

India has both GSM & CDMA networks with CDMA now having quite a market. It is about time that business users have the option to use an enterprise solution handset on the CDMA network. Today we'll take a look at the Blackberry 8830 from Tata Indicom. We have already taken a look at the Blackberry 8800, and the Blackberry 8830 is basically just the CDMA based version of the same.

Blackberry handsets have always been the enterprise solution handset just that now with even individuals have increased their productivity RIM has managed to focus equally on both - enterprise as well as individuals. Their Blackberry Curve 8300 and especially the latest Bold 9000 proves the companies strive to focus equally on both fronts.

Let's now focus on the handset, which is almost 99% similar to the Blackberry 8800, except for the hardware change of network operation.

The phone doesn't have EDGE. It only has GPRS which works in GSM mode as phone works in both GSM and CDMA network. As it is on TATA Indicom network, it will work on 1XEVDO and not EDGE. We are talking about 8830, but specs of battery mention 8800. 8830 has a 1400 mAh battery.

What makes a phone of the calibre of Blackberry in a class apart would be the service of the provider that is bundled along with. I must say I am truly happy with the way Tata Indicom has done that with blackberry, however It would be interesting to see if they can also have a separate HUB for Blackberry users.

Mr.Baretto, as always, here are the mistakes in your review. 1> Its common knowledge that the Battery is of 1400mAh. 2> Being a CDMA phone, how in the world are you telling that EDGE is the primary data connection and GPRS the backup? Your confidence in uttering stupidity is amazing. 3> The network indicator clearly shows 1X (CDMA)..!!! 4> The Blackberry 8800 comes with a 1400mAh battery and NOT 900mAh as mentioned by you. fyi, 900mAh is what the 8110 and 8120 come with. 5. Go back to basics, read up on technology, and please dont write a 'review' unless atleast you get your facts right. Convincing people is a distant thought now.. :-)
