Spore, that tremendously hyped game; has been creating news ever since its launch. If it wasn t people loving it, it was other people wondering if it was worth the wait. And then, the DRM reared its ugly head. You have to activate your copy of Spore online, and even then, you re limited to only three installs you don t even get credit if you uninstall the game. Naturally, there were consequences, and soon, Spore became one of the most pirated games in history.

In face of the backlash, it seems that EA has finally relented. You ll now be limited to five installs, not three, and eventually there will be a way to de-authorize PCs so you can install your game on a new machine. Executives also said that the game won t be rendered useless if EA takes down the online authorization servers they ll send you a patch which will neutralize the DRM before that happens. The upcoming Red Alert 3 will also have more forgiving DRM, or so they say.

But does this matter now? Much venom has been spewed, and many people who wanted Spore have likely already pirated it. If nothing else, though, at least we know EA can learn from its mistakes. We just wish they d stop making those mistakes in the first place.
