Microsoft and Cray have jointly introduced the Cray CX1 supercomputer. The supercomp is powered by Windows HPC Server 2008, which brings the Microsoft side of the equation to this partnership. The Cray CX1 is also the first Cray product to incorporate Intel processors for high performance computing.

With Wintel inside, the Cray boasts to be the most affordable supercomputer ever offered, with its price ranging from $25,000 to $60,000. The Cray CX1 targets broader industry markets such as life sciences, petroleum, aerospace, automotive, academic, financial services and digital media.

The Cray CX1 features up to 8 nodes and 16 Intel Xeon processors (Quad or dual-core), 64GB RAM per node (total 512GB RAM) and has 4TB internal storage. The Cray will be intended to combine computing, storage and visualization blades requirements at offices, laboratories and university departments. Check out the full specifications of the beast here.

Microsoft's Windows HPC Server 2008 plays nice with Linux and is expected to become a high-productivity system supporting myriad HPC capabilities. By joining hands with Cray and bringing the Cray CX1 to the mainstream, Microsoft has stepped into the rapidly growing HPC market as well.

The Cray CX1 will be available for purchase online -- just use a configurator to spec the machine to your liking, use your credit card and voila -- you are the proud owner of a supercomputer!

With supercomputers slowly becoming affordable, it can't be far until we have a supercomputer per college/university; or indeed (and even better) under our desks.
