A group of digital entertainment companies including Hollywood studios, retailers, service providers, and consumer electronics and IT companies have formed a consortium to develop a new digital framework that will offer the 'buy once, play anywhere' experience that comes with CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray mediums.

Officially named, the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) will address the growing confusion among consumers about buying, downloading and playing video digital content offered by multiple services. DECE will allow consumers to download and play content across a wide range of services and devices.

Basically, this new cross-industry initiative will enable consumers to purchase video content from a choice of online retailers and play it on a variety of devices and platforms from different manufacturers.

In addition to the freedom of playing the content on any device, the consortium also plans to offer consumers a rights locking feature or "virtual library" where they would be allowed to store their purchases for retrieval in a manner similar to accessing an email account, says Reuters.

Moreover, those devices or websites which are compatible with the new DECE standards will sport a brand logo to help consumers identify them.

This consortium is anchored by Alcatel-Lucent, Best Buy, Cisco, Comcast, Fox Entertainment Group, HP, Intel, Lionsgate, Microsoft, NBC Universal, Paramount Pictures, Philips, Sony, Toshiba, VeriSign, and Warner Bros. Entertainment.
