A look at some interesting startups, including a Twitter-like solution for corporates and the world's first MMOLG
TechCrunch50, an event dedicated for innovative startups concluded yesterday at the San Francisco Design Center, Concourse. The Goal was to launch 50 of the most innovative startups in front of some of the most influential people and corporations around the globe -- without the startups paying a penny. The idea was simple, if you deserve it, you'll win it -- and along with it comes the funding to take the startups even further.
Yesterday, we reported the RUGS concept that was previewed at the Techtree50. The event that wound up on the 10th was also an ocassion to select a numero uno amongst the fifty startups and there turned out to be one eventual winner. Yammer, a twitter model that extends twitter-like functionalities to the corporate world managed to impress the jury. According to TechCrunch, more than 10,000 individuals spanning 2,000 organizations signed up for the service right after its launch on Monday. Not bad for a startup!
All you need to join Yammer is a corporate e-mail address. You can then start following other people within your company. Companies also have the option to "officially" administer their own corporate Yammer network, however they need to pay for the administrative privileges that come with it.
Then there is Atmosphir, which came in as the runner up. This is a DIY gaming platform, currently in Beta, where you can play your own levels or choose from user uploaded maps on the Atmosphir community website. Minor studios, the developer behind the game, promises added features and functionality in later versions. Full release is expected by the end of the year.
Moving on, we have Grockit which is a one of its kind MMOLG. This "Massively Multiplayer Online Learning Game" is an attempt to bring the concept of multiplayer games such as World of Warcraft to interactive learning tools. It aims at bringing together the academically inclined together with the use of chat rooms and a point-based grading system.
Another notable concept is the Swype text input entry method for handhelds which we reported yesterday. These are just a few of the startups previewd at TechCrunch50. You can have a detailed look here.
