Yahoo has announced the demise of its social network experiment.
Yahoo is shutting down its social networking experiment Mash in September. Launched in September 2007, the invitees-only site was Yahoo's social networking experiment with a common set of features from My Yahoo, Facebook's old versionand MySpace. From a module gallery, the users could load set of modules on to their profile page and shuffle them around with a simple drag-and-drop style.
Yahoo! Community Manager Matt Warburton posted on Yahoo! Mash blog that the Beta service will shut down and the profiles, as well as data, with the exception of photos, age, sex and location will be unavailable. This will, however, not affect Yahoo! account or Yahoo! 360 profile holders.
Designed as a step ahead from Yahoo! 360, Mash was very similar to Facebook with AJAX start pages like functionality. This social experiment follows Yahoo's previous attempt at a mobile social site Mixd, which lasted only a few months. Wannabe web startups would do well to study such examples, as an initial experimental phase provides a lot of learning.
