November will bring a new wireless keyboard for the PS3 featuring a trackball, as well as a new 160GB PS3 bundle
Come November and you will see a top-of-the-line PlayStation 3 bundle that will include a capacious 160 GB hard drive, one Dualshock 3 controller, a voucher that'll let you download the PlayStation Network (PSN) title PAIN, and the adventure game -- Uncharted: Drake's Adventure.
This new PS3 will not offer PS2 compatibility, unfortunately.
The extra storage space hints that Sony is seriously touting the PS3 as a complete media device -- and not just a gaming console. It is clear that the hard drive on most PS3s will be used to store movies. After all, the PSN network does offer popular movies and TV shows for download. At launch, the bundle is expected to cost $499.
In a separate development, SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) has also unveiled a QWERTY keypad that will attach to a PS3 controller (DualShock 3 or SIXAXIS). Two shortcut buttons, a Communication Button and a Message Box Button, are placed on the lower part of the Wireless Keypad, enabling users to jump to pre-set features on XMB (XrossMediaBar) such as "Friends" and "Message Box" during game play. No more playing around with an on-screen keyboard! The keyboard is designed to act as a trackpad to add mouse-like controls. The entire body of the keyboard can be used as a mouse with the flick of a button. Connectivity is via Bluetooth and is recharged via USB (610mAh battery capacity).
Key features: - QWERTY keypad designed for fast, thumbs-only typing.
- Touch pad mode turns the main key area into a touch pad. When touchpad button is pressed, user can not use the keys for character input but can slide her finger on this area to select something on the screen. On the internet browser, user can see a cursor when this mode is set on.
- Dedicated short cut keys provide instant access to text-based communication applications on the PlayStation Network.
- Automatic pairing with the PS3 system via a USB cable.
- Charges by connecting it directly to the PS3 system using a USB cable.
The keyboard will also be available this November; its price remains unannounced.
