In the mini-laptop, netbooks and ultra-portable laptop race, Dell to has pulled up its socks and indicated that it plans to release the first ever mini-laptop called Dell Inspiron 901. The folks at Gizmodo got a sneak preview of the Dell Inspiron 901's full documentation. However, no official word is available to confirm the news.

Also called 'Mini Note' or 'Dell E' by those in the know, the long-rumored Inspiron 910 features 1.6Ghz Intel Atom N270 Diamondville with 533Mhz clock speed running on Intel 945GSE UMA chipset, upto 1GB DDR2-800 RAM, 8.9 inch WSVGA LED-display (1024x600) and offers 4GB-16GB solid state drive storage option.

Well, that's bit of a surprise since the just released Acer Aspire One , MSI Wind and Asus Eee PC 901 have similar CPU, motherboard, memory and display configuration (except MSI Wind has a 10 inch display).

Also Inspiron 910 bundles 4-cell battery while its competitors feature 6-cell battery pack. In terms of storage, Asus Eee PC and MSI Wind rock with 80GB HDD while Asus's first-gen Eee PCs feature 4-8GB SSDs. Perhaps Dell is working on a 2.5 inch SATA HDD option considering the current competition.

Aspire One, Wind and Eee PC offer Linux and Windows XP operating system with an optional offer. Following similar footsteps, Inspiron 910 features Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows XP option. The interesting thing is that Ubuntu has just made its debut in the sub-notebook segment with this model. Although the configuration mentions Ubuntu 8.04, it's quite possible that Canonical's recent Ubuntu Remix would be included instead of the former one. Weighing almost one kg, the Inspiron 910 features 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth support and WLAN/WWAN wireless networking options.

The package features nothing new compared to its competitors. Price will be the only deciding factor in this race. Gizmodo speculated that the Inspiron 910 might be priced around $299. Guess we'll have to hold on for official announcements from Dell.
