Team Speedtime claimed the top spot at AOCC 2008. Here, we have Ameya Dalvi in conversation with team member Susie, a.k.a First Lady Overclocker.
Team Speedtime from China topped most of the benchmarks and won the just-concluded Advanced OverClocking Championship 2008 held in Hong Kong. Team Sweden came a close second. Team India had a hard time with the not-so-perfect CPU sample they received in the tournament.
The tournament was about overclocking the given hardware using all means (air cooling, dry ice, liquid Nitrogen etc.) and obtaining the maximum score in 3 main benchmarks - 3DMark 2001, 3DMark Vantage and Super Pi. In simple terms, overclocking (OC) means running your components like CPU, Graphics card, RAM at speeds higher than the default rated speeds. That gives one a performance boost but in the process a lot more heat is generated and hence the cooling mechanisms mentioned above.
The winners took home a trophy and a cheque of 5000 USD, pretty neat, I'd say. Incidentally, the winning team had a female contestant, Susie, which is something unheard of in the enthusiast circle. But it's always good to see OC generate interest among ladies. I managed to catch up with her for a brief chat and thankfully, had a Taiwan-born South African friend to translate.

TechTree: Lady overclockers are virtually unheard of and you are the only female contestant here. How did you get into overclocking?
Susie:(Laughs) Yes, they call me the First Lady Overclocker in China. My boyfriend got me interested in overclocking and taught me how to do it.
I really wished I would bump into her boyfriend and ask him how he managed to pull that one off - getting her interested in OC. Wow!
TechTree: When did OC start for you?
Susie: It started 5 years back in 2003 when my boyfriend took part in a local OC competition. He asked me to help him crush dry ice and put it around the heat-sink. I really had a good time doing that and my interest grew as he taught me more.
TechTree: Now how does it feel to be crowned a Champion on the international stage?
Susie: I am very happy and so is the entire team. We had won a few tournaments before, but this is great.
TechTree: Any advice for other girls and ladies who generally don't get anywhere close to OC?
Susie: Yes, OC is very interesting and great fun. You should try it. Ask your boyfriends to teach you how to do it.
I wondered how many boyfriends would know how to do it.
TechTree: And any advice for all the boyfriends about how to get their girlfriends interested in OC?
Susie: Yes, show your girlfriend how to do it and if she doesn't like it, dump her and get another. (Laughs)
Overclockers, be warned. Whatever Susie says, I think that's a sureshot recipe for staying single all your life.
TechTree: Thank you Susie and all the best to you and your team.
Susie: Thank you.
Well, that's it for now. I suggested to Mr. Benson Lin - General Manager Asus, to organize such a tournament in India and he seemed to have taken it very seriously. So let's wait and watch.
