    LG Scarlet 32-inch TV (32LG60UR)

Sudeep Naik, Jul 11, 2008 1140 hrs IST

The 32LG60UR produces good picture quality, color and contrast ratio and makes images look lively.

Great design, 50000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 4ms response time, Invisible speakers, 2x HDMI (v1.3) ports, USB port, SimpLink.

Objects appear to be unnaturally vivid in color and sharpness, Mids and lows are muffled due to invisible speakers, USB port cannot be used to play movies.

Earlier it was a competition to see who had the biggest and then it came to clarity, sharpness, and how well it stood up to its competitors. Now, the game has just gotten better, with almost all LCD battles being fought over design. Manufacturers have managed to come up with something out of the ordinary - be it the diamond studded TV by Philips or the Series 6 by Samsung.

We have with us a sample from the LG Scarlet line of LCD TVs - LG's man-o-war for this fight and this year's "Innovations" award-winner at the CES in Las Vegas. Let's check it out.

LG sent us the LC 32LG60UR, which is the 32-inch Scarlet LCD TV and having seen the ads on every television channel, I couldn't wait to get it out of the box.

The first thing that came to my mind when we got it out of the box was, "It's a red-assed baboon", since all the "scarlet" was only at the back. Jokes apart, it's only after careful observation and angling of the TV on its swivel stand did I start appreciating its beauty.
Some other peculiar things about the Scarlet is the shiny see-through hole in the bezel. It acts as a touch-sensitive power button - soft blue when watching TV and red or "scarlet" when it's on standby. Personally, I preferred using the remote.

Also, the stand for the TV as a mirror finish and every time you go close enough it seems that someone is trying to look under you shirt (or shorts, depending on your height).

Other than that, the Scarlet looks like any other LCD TV.
It's what is inside that makes it stand apart from the rest. The speakers, for example, are not visible from the outside. The Scarlet's design makes the bezel work as a speaker, with several drivers implanted underneath and around the screen frame.

We bought 42’’ scarlet about 2 yrs back.. but suddenly its started giving problem with video display. while watching, picture disappears randomly and only sound comes. There technician came and checked as said since the problem is not coming now, he can’t do anything... and charged 250/- for coming. Next time when we called the technician, first he said he will take the TV with him to the service center, but when we forced him to check the problem infront of us, he opened the TV and said its was found to be a loose connection. So he souldered some wires. For this minor souldering he charged Rs. 1000/- again. Also, 42’’ scarlet does not have clear voice ( which the technician also accepted). Overall, I won’t recommend this TV, for bad voice quality and poor warranty and after sales service.

I have LG Scarlet 42inches LCD TV - the USB supports Divx format movies , jpeg pictures and mp3 formats for audio songs . If someone wants to compare LCDS with any brands , then request the consumers to play DVD and then check all the setting made in LCD and DVD player . request them to play the DVD using the HDMI cable - ex - if someone plays a DVD video using HDMI cable and the same video using the AV cables then u wont be able to compare the LCD with any good brands . The picture quality is good in Scarlet when u use HDMI cable . The price is also affordable when compared to Sony or Samsung .

50000:1 dynamic contrast ratio-we should probably reflect that the contrast ratios quoted by manufacturers are notoriously unreliable. In any case the price quoted in review is too high- it is easily available on the street for 45-46k. I for one have found the Samsung LA32A650A1- a true 1080p 32 inch LCD to be far superior. as well as the LA32A550P1 a full HD LCD a better deal at street price of 49k.

Forget the technical specifications. When it comes to comparing LCD TVs side-by-side, Sony and Samsung rock... I happen to visit numerous dealers for buy a new HD LCD. I found that the picture in Sony was simply amazing. Samsung was quite close. LG was not anywhere near them. After going through the specifications, I found that LG had a better figures in all the aspects - refresh rate, contrast ratio and all. But still, the images were looking amazing in Sony and Samsung. Its not that I am a being biased toward LG. I have an LG monitor which is awesome. But when it comes to LCD TV technology Sony rocks anytime...

what Neo says is right..any1 buyg an LCD TV shud go and watch it in a showroom with both models side by side and then take a decision. Sony simply rocks.. i spent 10k more for a Sony V series and very single penny is worth it...

wat neo and vcoin says, side-by-side comparision of Samsung and sony is not the right way, u cant compaire apple and oranges side by side, can u ? what i mean the technology wat both use are different, like the sharpness/color control, is different, both may not be using the same settings, let say u reset to 0 on both, but still i cant be same, bcause there is no std on these settings, 0 may not be actually 0 on both the pannels. Moreover the demo clips at the show rooms are made for each of the particular pannels, like sony will play the clip which looks superb on their lcd, but may not look the same on samsung. So u carry some gud clips which u feel thats gud, and play that clip there and see for ur self. get some high action, some real colorful clips etc etc. yes u hv do some experiments on ur own, dont buy wat the showroom guy says...... most of them are not technical...

I do agree that comparing 2 TVs of different brands side by side is the best way! There is a catch in this...Some showrooms play good DVD on Sonys and normal cable (not even digital) on other brands...makes it look like Sony is of better quality...the guy at the showroom confessed that Sony pays them to put up a seperate stall playing good quality video!

Bottom line. the showrooms wanna sell products with the highest profits. So they naturally tend to be in that one's favour. Simply looking should not be believing. Take the remote from the showroom operator. if it says it's got better specs than sony, samsung; You'll see the difference once you fiddle around with the display settings. All the LCDs in the markets have got All sorts pre set picture settings. Just Going from one to another brings about a drastic change one wouldn't believe oneself. Now, End of the Line, If your smart, next time you go to a showroom and see 2 LCDs 'live' as youd say it. Try these simple steps first, before blindly jumping to conclusions that SOny's best, Samsung, Oh my god, second best. Use your head for crying out loud. Your a buyer.

- USB port cannot be used to play movies? Who wrote this review? I use my flash-drive literally everyday to watch stuff on it. it works perfectly. even the remote has the basic functions keys you need. And if the reviewer says the objects looks unnaturally vivid? Maybe, there's a chance that you need to give the in-built sensor (called 'Intelligent' sensor) a chance to work his charm. And so obviously, put the settings off of the 'Vivid' selection. You can't go wrong with Scarlet. Looks beautiful. Has all the features you could think, or even maybe more than you need. I'll rate it 5-star. Period.

Well for of you who are planning to buy a newlcd/plazma. I just recently baught the scarlet lcs 42", and i am very disspointed with it.... it sucks, bad sound , pic quality is not too great and they claim its a full hd tv. I have a samsung plazma with much better pic quality. I had baught this this lcd for my ps3 and the pics is ofetn hazy. Recently i saw some red dots too which come and go, have called the tech twice but the dots dont show when the tech is there..... just sucks... big time... its only a month old lcd. My advice to you all dont buy LG....

It can play Movies from USB pen drive, I confirm as I have this model of LCD with me. Howeverr, technical manual clearly writes that it might not be able to play if the media is not FAT-32 and not formated with Windows.

Why does Techtree insist on quoting the Maximum Retail Price in its reviews- are U in league with the manufacturers. These days only fools buy at MRP. This LG Scarlet 32-inch TV (32LG60UR) is available at 43k in Open Market in Delhi & at this price of around 43k is a good deal. At MRP it is dacoity by LG.

The author of this review is definetely a nontechnical person because even a dumb guy would discuss the USB feature which no other brand offers. With USB u can watch pictures and movies stored in your pen drive or hard disk. This is a really very important and winning deature, not sure why the author did not consider mentioning it....

There is no point buying full hd tv's below 45inches.its just a company gimmick to earn extra bucks.. and for 42inches i would rather buy a plasma cos they have bcome real cheap and is a better than lcd(wont go in the tech dept).

I always tot that LG Scarlet 32 Inches is not 50000 : 1. i was told that only 37 and 42 inches have 50000:1 ratios. Also i was told that very high contrast ratios are not able to deliver the proper picture formats.

I have a Philips 42PF9831 LCD TV and have yet to find a TV that gives the same color saturation, contrast and brightness. Its specs may not look that good on paper but its picture quality and sound quality has to be seen to believe. I have to buy a second Tv and was considering Bang and Olufsen Beovision 8. That was the only budget TV that came close to this one. I hope LG has a good model. I will go and check it out today
