Today we have the GTX 280's smaller sibling with us, the GTX 260 from Zotac. This card comes from their 'Amp Edition' line up, which are factory overclocked. The XFX GTX 280 that we reviewed earlier, performed well, particularly in games like Crysis with high AA. On the flip side it costs a bomb, so wasn't a very feasible solution for your HD gaming needs. Since the GTX 260 and the GTX 280 have the same GT200 core, I expect it to perform similar to the GTX 280, while costing a lot less. There's only one way to find out, so let's start by checking out the specs of the card.

Specifications

The core of the GTX 260 is clocked at an impressive 650MHz compared to the stock clock of 576MHz. That's an increase of 74MHz, which should give you a nice 13% boost right out of the box. The memory is also overclocked to 2100MHz from the stock 1998MHz, giving you another 5% boost. I think both the core and memory can be pushed even higher, since the card has a very good cooler.

Some of the major differences between the GTX 280 and the GTX 260 lies with the no of shader units and the memory bus. The GTX 260 has 192 shader units running at a speed of 1400MHz. The memory bus width is 448-bit giving it a total bandwidth of 111.9 GB/sec. Compared to the GTX 280 which has 240 shader units and a 512-bit memory bus, the Zotac GTX 260 'Amp' Edition should be about 5-10% slower, which is acceptable. The rest of the features are the same as the GTX 280 and I'll list them here for your reference:

  • Hybrid Graphics Support

  • PCI-E 2.0

  • 2 way/3 way SLI

  • GeForce PhysX

  • CUDA parallel processing

  • DirectX 10
