Total PC sales reached 7.34 million (73.4 lac) units in 2007-2008, led by significant growth in notebook sales.
Total PC sales putting desktops and notebooks together have reached 7.34 million (73.4 lac) units in 2007-2008, a growth of 16 percent over the previous year, reveals the latest IT industry review released by the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT).
This growth is led by a significant growth in notebook sales, which grew by 114 percent while desktop sales grew only by 1 percent. PC sales are projected to touch 8.5 million (85 lac) units in the fiscal 2008-09.
Commenting on findings of the study, Vinnie Mehta, executive director of MAIT, said, "Notebook consumption has driven the PC market in India in 2007-08. With sales crossing a million units in the second-half of last fiscal, total sales of notebooks in 2007-08 surpassed 1.8 million (18 lac) units growing 114 percent over the last year. Today, notebooks account for a quarter of the total PC market in the country, up from less than three percent four years ago. With shifting consumer preferences in favor of notebooks over desktops, this proportion will only get larger with time."
"Although sales to large enterprises were less than expected, overall consumption in the PC market was led by telecom, banking and financial service sectors, education and BPO/IT-enabled services, and e-governance initiatives of Union and state governments," Mehta said.
Meanwhile, the household segment accounts for 44 percent of overall notebook sales, which is an impressive 150 percent growth. The SEC (Socio Economic Class) A and SEC B households, together, contributed to over 90 percent of notebook sales in the household segment. It's worth mentioning here that notebooks have also started to make rapid inroads into SEC C households as well.
In addition to PC sales, the study also talks about the Internet industry. The number of active Internet entities increased to 7.2 million (72 lac) subscriptions by March 2008 -- from 6.0 million (60 lac) units in March 2007. With this, Internet users have exceeded 52 million. Internet penetration by entities in the top 22 cities was 46 percent and it was 21 percent among households. The business segment now accounts for 29 percent of the total active Internet entities, and households account for the remaining 71 percent. For a more detailed view of the IT industry. click here.
