I am sure that by now you are aware of Techtree's PowerPlay event. It's a tech workshop where we talk about over-clocking to novices and experts alike. We have already conducted it in 6 cities across India and the response has been overwhelming. Gigabyte, who also happen to be associated with PowerPlay, took the concept a step or two further last month, with their Spring Break & Plug Fest 2008.

They brought together Editors from select publications ranging over two dozen countries across the globe for the two-day event held at their Head Quarters in Taiwan. I happened to be the sole representative from India. To be very honest with you, I didn't know what to expect from an event like this, but at the end of it, I can assure you, it was totally worth it, especially if you are the geeky types who loves to get his hands on upcoming, unreleased technology products.

They showcased their then unreleased Intel P45 motherboard lineup; not just showcased but we actually got to put it through the grind. Unfortunately I was under an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) followed by a little more confusion over the terms of the NDA and hence couldn't write about it before. But now I am free to talk about it.

More than just testing the product, interacting with your counterparts from different corners of the globe was a great learning experience. Other than helping each other out with the beta testing, we also shared our experience and opinions regarding various benchmarks and test procedures. Coming back to the testing, there was as much liquid Nitrogen at our disposal as coffee or Coke; sounds like a Geek dream, doesn't it? But the most remarkable part being, whenever one of us would point a serious flaw in the operation, a new BIOS would be ready within a couple of hours, courtesy of the Gigabyte engineers sitting a floor above. There must have been around half a dozen BIOS revisions during the duration of the workshop. What looked like a fairly raw product at the start of the beta testing seemed near perfect by the end of the second day. I am sure Gigabyte too benefited immensely from this exercise.

I don't want to talk much about the P45 in this write-up because we have a sample in the labs and we will publish a full fledged review of the same soon which would also include the results of the tests I conducted in Taiwan. Going by my initial impressions, the product looks quite promising and has tons of options for over-clocking, much to the delight of the enthusiast.

Before I end this note, I have to make a mention about the trip to Tien Lei Hot Springs Resort (it's a beautiful place) and the blast we had at BarCode. Thank you, Gigabyte. And a special thanks to Ginny for facilitating a quick trip to Taipei 101 and for assisting me with an authentic 16-course Chinese meal (yes, I had it).
