    SansaClip 2GB music player

Shannon Rodricks, Jun 05, 2008 2019 hrs IST

It's a tough cookie to crack; but will this take away the crown of the 'Best "Mini" Music Player'?

Cool Design, Sturdy build, Easy wearability, Ease of use, Good interface.

Unsatisfactory reproduction of lower frequencies, Slightly higher price.

SansaClip In Real Life

To me, testing a device designated as portable, within a lab is like testing an electrical circuit under ideal conditions, it doesn't give the best picture of the device's capabilities. So, to counter this, I took the player out for a spin. Basically I tested the visibility of the screen under bright sunshine, and then took it to one of the most inhospitable locations on the Indian subcontinent, Mumbai local trains at rush hour. Basically this test was for basic operations and comfort of wearing it in cramped quarters reminiscent of a sardine tin.

Reviewer's Log

Test: Oh So Abundant Sunshine
Time: 14:15, 21/05/2008.
Location: Nariman Point.

Well I stood with the sun shining directly on the screen. Adjusted the brightness to medium and checked the screen. The screen wasn't visible. When I adjusted the brightness to maximum, I was able to see enough of the text on the screen to guess the name of the song. Tilting the screen by 15 degrees from the direct sunlight gave me clear visibility under both settings.

Test: That's my foot A.K.A. wear some deo dude!!
Location: Churchgate bound fast train boarded at Andheri.

The above statements are general thoughts that run through my head when I am about to get into a Churchgate bound fast train during morning rush hour. Anyway, I clipped the player to my change pocket.

Ok, recap, the player is clipped onto my jeans' change pocket which is on the right hand side. When I tried to perform the basic functions of a music player user (changing sound tracks by using next and back, increasing and decreasing volume, enabling/disabling hold and play/pause) with my right hand I found that due to the cramped quarters and jutting out of my elbow while attempting to perform the above tasks I was unsuccessful. However, when I used my left hand I was easily able to perform the above functions. The above functions are easy to perform with minimum finger movement and no hand movement. Basically all you need to do is move your fingers to perform the above tasks. You do not need to move your wrist or your hand to do so, a feature very much appreciated while in the above situation.

Since the player is smaller than even the change pocket on my pant sitting wasn't an uncomfortable experience. The earphone jack is located to the right of the player which essentially doesn't increase the length of the player which is the usual cause of an uncomfortable sitting experience. The increase in the breadth is not a problem when the player is clipped onto a number of locations like the above mentioned pant change pocket, T-Shirt hem, belt to name a few.

I absolutely love my Sansa clip. It's so light-weight and compact, that I sometimes forget I have it on (when the music is paused or it's turned off). The only problem is that it's not really any good without the USB cord. I misplaced mine about two months ago and cannot download music or charge it and am having a hard time finding a replacement cord.

The recent firmware update adds ogg format support and improves battery life and adds support for podcasts. The review also does not mention that the player supports both MSC and MTP USB modes so you can use it with programs like Windows Media Player 10/11 to manage the device and create playlists and also use it in linux without any problem.
