Here's a baseball cap that can also read your mind
What's so great about a baseball cap with a mobile phone in it? Well, it is a baseball cap that can also read your mind. The picture below shows a new EEG system developed by researchers from National Chiao-Tung University in Vietnam. The system is convenient to use, owing to its portability and the incorporation of a wireless system. Moreover, it's more energy-efficient than its predecessors, thanks to advances in sensor and information technology, while also having a lower cost than its predecessors. The system currently runs on a lithium-ion battery which at the current state of technology can run simultaneously for two days.
The system collects the EEG signals via five embedded dry electrodes that attach to the wearer's forehead and one other electrode that attaches behind the left ear. These signals are then transmitted wirelessly to a data receiver which processes the information in real-time by the use of a Dual Core processor. The system incorporates a Bluetooth as well as an RF transmission that transmits information up to 10m and 600m, respectively. The inclusion of both systems is to cater to different applications. Once the signals are processed, they can be sent for storage or to other devices that may display it on a screen or an audio device.
The system has currently been tested to check its response to the levels of drowsiness in drivers. When the system detects that a driver has reached a level of drowsiness, it will display an alert or sound a warning tone that informs the driver that he is unfit to drive. The system once perfected could have a range of applications from medical (monitoring an elderly person's state, a patient's condition) to gaming. The researchers are currently working on perfecting the system while also attempting to minituarize it and apply the system on chip technology.
