Windows Vista is not networking friendly. I've three computers at home -- two desktops with Windows XP and a recently bought Vista Home laptop. The Windows XP PCs have no issues networking but I can't say the same about the Vista laptop. For all my efforts, Vista just doesn't let me see other desktops.

It's really frustrating to see that something new that is supposed to be faster and more efficient actually isn't. Vista should be a lot simpler and yet when it comes to simple things like "Simple File Sharing," it just isn't so anymore.

However, you cannot blame Vista for this completely as this problem occurs if the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder component is not installed on the Windows XP-based computer.

Windows Vista has a new Network Map feature which requires LLTD component installed on XP machines in order to work. This component is responsible for the network diagrams of connections to troubleshoot connectivity issues. The Network Map uses LLTD queries devices on the network to determine how the network is organised.

Since Windows Update didn't update it at all for you, manually download it here.

Your link for LLTD manual download is incorrect. Please give correct link. The link given by you goes to SATA HDD problem

hi, firstly i have 6 systems 3 xp sp3 and 3 vista sp1 and i DONT have any issues managing my internal network at all, so the issue beeing discussed here could be an isolated one or jus a randon occurance. secondly i have 4 SATA HDD and they setup as RAID and i dont see any issue such as beeing mentioned here. pls note i am not critising the colum at all but simply sharring facts as they are, however, a good one for noobs using vista

I have 3 XP PCs and 2 Vista Notebooks. in my office, linked by wireless network. All 5 machines can access well to one another. Recently, I bought another HP Vista Notebook. But this machine can't view the 3 XPs on the view map. The other 2 Vista also cannot access to this machine. How am I going to solve this problem? Should I download anything from Microsoft?
