India May See iPhone Launch in Sep

Techtree News Staff, Apr 16, 2008 1852 hrs IST

Apple may launch its iconic iPhone in India this September.

    mail share

Those in the business of unlocking Apple iPhones may well make hay while the sun shines...

Because Apple Computer may launch its iconic iPhone in India this September. Apple retail sources have been quoted by a leading business daily as saying that the iPhone is expected to launch in India through carrier Vodafone sometime in the first week of September 2008. The sources have hinted that initially only the 8GB version will be launched for somewhere around Rs 28,000 with the 16GB version to follow suit sometime later.

Meanwhile, unnamed Vodafone sources have been quoted as confirming the iPhone carrier deal, though the Apple retail sources haven't ruled out the company extending access for iPhone users to all major telecom carriers in the country.

We sincerely hope this isn't a mere speculation but the real thing! For Apple remains tight-lipped as usual, except for the perennial (and rather stiff) "launch will happen in 2008" response.

Will wait till Apple clears all the bugs, and will wait on T-mobile/HTC to come out with Android. Will gauge and then decide on what to buy.

Dame it !! they are launching it for the price of 36100/- that is way too much ? Apple has a policy of launching their product for high cost at the start and they drop the prices later?so i think everyone should wait and watch ..its surly not worth for 36100 bux.

Apple is planning to use India as a dumping ground for its 1st generation phones and that too at an overpriced rate. Stop buying them and instead open ur eyes wider and look at other nice alternatives like HTC Touch Diamond or better still, save ur money and wait for Samsung Tocco & Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 due for release late this summer although I am sure we might have to wait longer for an Indian release

Launch Date for India has been delayed for a very long time...Inspite of having the World's Largest Customer Base of Mobile Phone User's. This proves Apple's inability to provide SUPPLY for such a huge Market, as probably they needed time to set-right their production facitlity. I believe we INDIANS should start BACKING-UP our INDIAN BRANDS which create a GLOBAL IMPACT.

How many out of this 'worlds' largest mobile base' can afford smartphones? Basic telephony is what the masses (and I mean the entire country) require and are willing to pay for. For that matter- I've seen so many morons with top end N95s who are unwilling to pay for GPRS services but just buy it to show off. 'Apples inability to provide supply'? What are u smoking? They're having enough demand at home in the US and have been slowly rolling it out to countries based on projected sales. As I said-what % of people here are going to pay 28k for a phone? How many people in india even use the GPRS capabilities of their phones? The iPhone is sold focusing on its internet surfing experience, OBVIOUSLY they will want to focus on demand in mature mobile markets first!! (by mature I mean those who use extra services like internet or 3G and not just basic telephony/SMS) And what does your stupid patriotism have to do with this anyway? You mean we've got some superb great homegrown mobile brand that we should' 'BACK UP'(sic) ?

28000 for a phone that does not support Bluetooth FTP protocol.....simply meaning you can do a thing with iPhone bluetooth except use the bluetooth headphones to listen music (YOU CANNT DAMM SHARE FILES WITH OTHER PHONES )....plus iPohone does not have expandable memory, so I am stuck with 4GB, no replacable battry so cant carry an extra battry pack...................No way man I am happy with my 30GB iPod for music and PSP for movies.....for phone my good old 6610 is still working flawlessly

Once you buy an iPhone you will know how you will love it. I have most of HTC phones, N95, E90. Nothing compares to my iPhone. The browser technology is one of the best. No other company has been able to do the same. Once you jailbreak it the possibilities are endless.

I-phone does not have GPS yet. The GPS version of I-phone is not out in the world market even so one majot advantage is lost in buying the I-phone. HJTC has so many models that have in-built GPS and HTC is surely a good choice for many customers in India.Nokia E-90 is a bulky but a great asset as it has all you need in pne place.Cost of I-phone is dropping worldwide, and it is not worth the 28k which people will be spending on anI-phone this Diwali.

I always wanted to have one. I didn't like the idea of tinkering with firmware (unlocking). Reading comments - Bluetooth to me is not required. I hardly use one on E90. I use WiFi and USB for these purposes. Till I get a bluetooth enabled car, this is not the concern. Now, I carry an iPod and E90. So this will be great to have. I hope it is enabled for international roaming. iTunes I think is one of the best product to organize my thousands of CDs, so no problem here too. I was anyway thinking of switching to Vodafone from Airtel ever since they acquired Hutch. So everything lines up. I just need to see which version is being launched. I frequently travel to US and have dedicated AT&T sim as well. So I hope they would allow me the pleasure of using iPhone features in AT&T while using alternate sim. I hate transferring contacts between phones so didn't want to buy iPhone in US without official support in India.

Great Phone, However why is the price so high in India. 20K INR would make it a hit. Display size, browsing experience are amazing and its official now that Nokia is also planning a similar device - "Tube". Hope to see a good competitive product to Apple Iphone launched in India.

Just too costly... Maybe dump of remaining 2G phones in INDIA.. That too at much higher price.. (when it will be tied up to Vodafone as it is said, which will charge some more bucks) Reading to these comments, I am thinking that they (Apple Guys) may even succeed. Kudos to their intelligence...and even to iPhone lovers' as well.

Rexdude, I think u should also consider these points, A Phone which has been so overrated cannot provide basic features like: 1) Bluetooth transfer of files between two phones. 2) Itunes a must to download. 3) Restricted to buy with a specific service provider only. 4) n number of firmware updates till date. 5) Price reduction and refund back of money to its initial buyers in just a couple of months...and many more sick policies adopted by Apple, makes it no better than its other compititors. So, dude don't be a fool, think and decide rather exhagerating so much!!!

Puneet, either you are an illitrate trying to pretend that ur not, or you are a pure dumbass. I'll prove you that....for you solution for Apple's restriction policy is simply unlocking...that proves where ur thinking ends. And I bet, you'll be the last person on earth who could afford to buy an Iphone.

Ah yes another dumb comment ! Ok lets answer your stupid questions. 1) Valid point, but since this is a pure stylish phone its not a deal breaker. 2) So what ? Even the ipod works only with itunes ? Isn't the ipod the No1 selling mp3 player. 3) Again not a problem for the target audience - customers who want to flaunt their phones. 4) So if you don't want Apple to improve their product ? 5) Did Apple have to give money back to early customers - NO. But they did anyways. The motorazr V3 cost 32k when launched. Its price was halved in just a couple of months. I did not year ANY protest about that. Why mention only about the iphone? Based from your post I can only conclude that you are an extremely biased person and so we should not take any advice from you. Those who want a stylish phone are free to spend 28k and buy the Apple iphone. I would rather buy an O2 and I will NEVER buy the iphone. But that doesn't mean that is a pathetic phone.

So you have contacts from Apple USA and you are STILL so biased ! Wow I am amazed ! If you hate the phone so much why do you still keep contacts in Apple ? And what facts are you looking for ? Your last post was just BS and nothing of substance. Your earlier rantings and ravings at least had some irrelevant data. You have not found fault with anything I said about the iphone being a phone with style over function and phones like the N95 are function over style. Yet you claim I talk BS ? So please don't give such BS that you got 'contacts' in Apple (probably your contact is the person who cleans the toilets !) He he

Ah I cannot resist commenting on all this BS here. Apple is a company that wants to make money. Pure and simple. The iPhone is a phone for pure style ! It is NOT meant to replace a Windows mobile phone. Why don't people make fun of the Nokia 8800 phone which has no great features to speak off ? @wozzy- Battery is the least problem. I have a 3 year old ipod and the battery still lasts me 5 hours of music playing. I know it s***ks that you can't replace it but that is not a major minus point at all.
wozzy
,mumbai, on Apr 17, 2008 12:42 AM
all things aside....the main problem is its battery...you cant replace it yourself...if it dies out then you have to send it to apple for a replacement.and for which apple will rip you off ..thats pathetic..and thats the only reason i havent bought the iphone

Apple requires all updates to the OS and firmware to be delivered via the iTunes store. Trouble is, the iTunes store is not available in India, which means you can't upgrade anything. You're better off with a jailbroken 16Gb iPhone that you can buy for next to nothing on the grey market. That is, if you're really that desperate to have an iPhone.
iphone is cool
,delhi, on Apr 17, 2008 03:03 PM
i dont think u've ever dealt wid apple products. Firstly iPod's have been here since ages n the updates do not require the iTunes store it just requires iTunes!! N all iPhones updates are free so again u dont need any iTunes store it updates just like an iPod wld... n for all those cribbing abt Apple release n number of updates... i think dat is the very best thing abt it... cause wid every update Apple adds more functionality n features...so everytime u udate u have a new feature or a more stable phone..!!

Yup..for those with more money than brains. Price wise-a fully featured UNLOCKED N95 8GB sells for around the same or less-you don't have to void your warranty by cracking it to make it work either. But ooh, look it's got such a wonderful interface! Here, take my money! Seriously..even for those who say you can get it on the grey market-I wonder at the idea of putting down 18 or 12k (quite a large sum of money) on something sold without warranty, cracked etc. But again, as I said-if you've got more money than you know what to do with, more power to you.

Rex..I think you are more obsessed with "Iphone" rather, if you take statistical figures into consideration, India is still the Largest Customer Base, who can afford to buy premium phones like the N95's. As such, if you do some R&D with your Apple folks out in the US, you will realize what I said (Apple cannot fulfill the Demand Supply gap for India, which led to the delay in its launch) was based on true facts disclosed by APPLE itself. So, Dude please make sure you do ur Homework before you critisize.

in our country, we have 3g nowhere, gprs/edge max out at class 10 transmission. so this is silly to go for 3g/evdo handsets. dont know why they are'nt starting 3g/evdo. india has more than 15 crore people using cdma, but service providers are hesitating to implement evdo, same applies to gsm service providers for 3g. so what rexdude said is correct. this is just a show off to buy such a costly handset, since most features are unusable without 3g. so its just a multimedia phone in such conditions. look people are so crazy that many a people are demanding unlocked iphone from mobile stores. and most of them never heard about apple. i never meant that iphone isnt a good phone, it proved to be revolutionary phone since its launch, but a gizmo is useless until we can use it in full flame.

Quite the phone looks absolutley cool, first reaction ur dead if u drop it the lcd is just going to break, putting a cover on kind of destroys the look itself no doubt. Software wise it can't do a damn thing even if u install third party apps it seems pathetic compared to a WM ppc. remeber u can't even forward sms unless u install 3rd party apps. BUT SUPPOSEDLY THE RESALE VALUE ON THE IPHONE ON THE GREY MARKET IS REALLY GOOD @ 13K

Cracked iPhone is available for Rs.18000/- for 8 GB model but without bill & warranty. Some people are already using it since a couple of months or close to a year without any issues. It would be difficult for people to shell out Rs.10000/- extra for just one year warranty.
