AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has newly made some significant announcements. The company is shipping -- for the first time in the PC market -- two triple-core Phenom processors. It has announced immediate availability of four new high-performance Phenom X4 processors with the TLB bug fix, as well as availability of quad-core Opteron "Barcelona" processors from computer manufacturers beginning the middle of the second quarter this year.

AMD's two triple-core Phenom processors shipping for the first time are: the Phenom X3 8400 2.1GHz ($152 OEM price per 1,000 unit lots) and the Phenom X3 8600 2.3GHz processors. Initially, AMD will sell both triple-core Phenoms through system resellers and OEMs. ZT Systems will be the first to launch AMD triple-core based systems on March 31st.

With these triple-core Phenoms, AMD hopes to target price-performance points that two- and four-core processors can't easily match, said Pat Moorehead, vice president (Advanced Marketing) of AMD. Moorehead added that the initial Phenom X3 processors will ship as the B2 "stepping" or version with follow-on versions to be B3. Incidentally, B3 versions fix the TLB bug that AMD has qualified all along as an extremely rare occurrence that affects possibly only high-end customers. When paired with AMD 780 Series chipsets, these triple-core Phenoms are expected to deliver up to 30 percent performance improvement over and above dual-core processors at the same clock speed.

The immediately available, four new Phenom X4 processors with TLB bug fix are: the X4 9500 2.2GHz ($190 OEM price per 1,000 unit lots) and X4 9550 2.2GHz ($195 OEM price per 1,000 unit lots); X4 9750 2.4GHz ($209 OEM price per 1,000 unit lots) and X4 9850 Black Edition processor (designed to be overclocked) 2.5GHz ($229 OEM price per 1,000 unit lots). All quad-core Phenoms are targeted at higher-end gaming segments, AMD said. The company also added a 65Watts low-power desktop quad-core Phenom -- X4 9100e 1.8GHz ($200 OEM price per 1,000 unit lots) that would allow OEMs to design cooler and quieter systems.

Lastly, the chipmaker said its quad-core Opteron "Barcelona" processor would be available from computer manufacturers in the middle of the second quarter of 2008.
