Later this month, PS3 gamers will be able to download interactive content including games, ring tones, and videos on their consoles. On Thursday, Sony announced on its 'PlayStation Blog' that a system update (v 2.20) is on the cards for the PS3 that will add Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 or BD-Live capability, thus making PS3 a complete entertainment hub.

Users will also then be able to copy photos and playlists onto their PSPs, using their handhelds as remote control for playing music on their PS3s. The update will reportedly also add a 'resume' feature for pause-playing Blu-ray movies. Meanwhile, Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 requires an Internet connection, and at least 1GB of local storage.

Courtesy the update, users will be able to download bonus movie scenes, subtitles, trailers, short films, interactive movie-based games, and so on. They will be able to play DivX and WMV format videos that are tyically larger than 2GB. The control panel of the DVD/BD player will get 'mosquito noise reduction' for improved movie playback.

All said, Sony's PS3 post the update will qualify as the first Blu-ray player capable of Internet access and downloads. Interestingly, Panasonic is also planning on a downloads-capable Blu-ray player later this year. Sony itself is planning a stand-alone Blu-ray player that will be capable of downloading bonus content, but will not be BD-Live or Internet downloads-capable. The BDP-S350 Blu-ray player (the name the player will likely have) is expected to cost in the region of $400.

PS3 is starting to sound like a machine I might have to acquire. I already like the PS3 80gb package coming out this summer that includes Metal Gear Solid 4 and the DualShock 3 wireless controller. That alone has made me ~o^ raise a brow. Now this update maybe the last bit of convincing I may need to purchase a system I've supported since their first Playstation which I imported for $400 because it wasn't available here until the next year. Haha... ahh, the good old days...
