A most eagerly awaited game sequel that is slated to hit the stands nearly a decade after the original Space odyssey has now let loose additional screenshots plus a new trailer. We're talking about "Starcraft II", sequel to Blizzard's 'Starcraft', the popular Space and aliens real-time role-playing strategy game.

Now the sequel, we hear, will be more 2D and less 3D to keep up with the look of the original game while incorporating a new 3D engine. Chris Sigaty, lead developer of "Starcraft II" said Blizzard is working hard at making the 3D engine as unobtrusive as possible. "It's a whole 3D engine, so there will be differences to some degree but our core goal out of it is to have that really fast-paced action, quickly grabbing units and assigning them to particular targets, you know, to match the fast-paced action," Sigaty is reported to have said. He said in many ways making the sequel to the much-loved original was a harder task than making a new game or even a sequel to any of their other games -- thanks to the hardcore fan-base. While they've taken care to incorporate valid suggestions from their user forums, major changes are expected once the game goes into beta.

The big leap is that of the "Zerg" as a playable race for the game (previously, Blizzard had only shown off the Terran and Protoss units in demos). According to Blizzard, the "Zerg" will feature new units that will change StarCraft II's strategy and tactics. While many of the Zerg's original units will be returning (Hydralisk and Mutalisk), others like Queen will get newer abilities.

Some new units will be added including the Roach, a fast-moving melee attacker that regenerates quickly; the Corrupter, an air-to-air combat unit that takes over enemy units and turns them into turrets; and the Infester that is designed to sneak underground into Terran buildings and use dark swarm to take them over.

There's no official release date for "Starcraft II" yet but reports suggest it will be out later this year.

Meanwhile, the all new trailer can be viewed here and 11 new screenshots here.
