LG Electronics has today announced what the company claims is the "world's fastest Blu-ray writer". The GGW-H20L promises the fastest Blu-ray (BD) writing speed -- 6x maximum.

The GGW-H20L is an IDE device that can be mounted on any existing desktop PC. It is learnt that while a normal CD can store up to 700MB, a double-layer BD can store up to 50GB data. To understand it better: data content of up to 73 CDs (approximately 35 Bollywood films) can be stored in one BD Media.

LG Electronics claims taking back-ups on the GGW-H20L that has 50GB storage capacity not only makes the task more easy but also more reliable as compared to a magnetic tape. Besides, large-sized software programs and designs can be stored on the GGW-H20L.

Commenting on the launch, R Manikandan, business group head (IT Division) of LGEIL, said, "By launching the world's fastest Blu-ray writer with a 6x maximum write speed, LG once again proves itself the leader."

The LG Blu-ray writer GGW-H20L with an IDE interface for desktop PCs is immediately available for a MRP of Rs 29,990 (inclusive of taxes).

we are direct importers of HP 16X SATA Blu-ray Writer (AR482AA) ..ready stock available..latest version... and mind this 1 is 16X...

Only fools will buy this thing. an blank 25gb brd costs Rs 1000. for Rs 2200 i got a 160gb hard disk.

Well, there's the factor that the disks are better for long term storage, and yes, the prices will drop. Blank CD's used to be in that price range 10+ years ago.

we don't have the luxury to wait 10 years ...technology is moving so fast.... BD has to come down the price within a year or two or some cheap alternative will come up.... BTW we still don't have DVD9 media availability in plenty and the price are still around Rs50 where as normal DVD5 are around Rs10. I think in the following years in india DVD9 will gradually replace DVD5 ... long way to go for BD...
