Yesterday, Apple Computer released a major update that improves the security of its Mac OS X operating system. The company also released version 3.1 of its Safari browser for Mac and Windows.

The Mac OS X update, "APPLE-SA-2008-03-18 Security Update 2008-002", is meant for Leopard as well as Tiger operating systems. As part of this security update, Apple has provided over 40 fixes for AFP, Apache, Application Firewall, AppKit, CF Network, CoreFoundation, CoreServices, ClamAV, CUPS, Emacs, Image Raw, PHP, Preview, X11, and other components. Details on the update are available here.

In case some of you have been lagging behind, Apple has incorporated previous security updates into its latest update.

Apple's other announcement -- release of Safari version 3.1 for Mac and Windows -- promises not to disappoint, especially users of Windows.

Apple claims Safari 3.1 is capable of loading Web pages 1.9 times faster than IE7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2. The company also claims that Safari 3.1 is capable of running JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers.

Additionally, Safari 3.1 now supports CSS animations, CSS Web fonts, and HTML 5 media, besides providing improved SVG support along with HTML 5's offline storage support.

And, 13 bugs have been fixed for the Safari browser, WebCore, and WebKit. Details regarding Safari 3.1 can be found here.

I downloaded Safari 3.1 this morning and restarted to my computer to find that it won't restart. The cursor keeps spinning in a circle and it does not start. Is there a bug here? Incompatibility with Tiger?
