    ACi Ultra Mini Tablet PC

Rohan Naravane, Mar 14, 2008 1233 hrs IST

An "ultra-mini" laptop with some decent features -- and some silly drawbacks

Good-quality screen, 120 GB disk space, multiple input options, lightweight

Underpowered to run the installed Windows Vista smoothly (which leads to sluggish performance), weak webcam

Benchmarks and Analysis
The ACi Ultra Mini comes pre-loaded with Windows Vista Basic, so we'll start with the basic benchmarking tool, the Windows Experience rating.

The score is lower than that of traditional laptops because of the low-power, energy-efficient components

SiSoftware Sandra 2008

Comparatively, the processor beats the 1 GHz VIA and the 600 MHz Celeron

The processor benchmarking scores are similar to those of the 600 MHz Pentium M, because the A100 platform is derived from the Pentium M architecture

The drive index is comparable to that of a standard 2.5-inch laptop hard drive

The scores are almost 3.5 times less than those of current Core 2 Duo based solutions

Again, comparatively lower scores -- due to the on-board 512 KB of cache, while chips of today's generation have 2 and 4 MB

Note: I did try running the PCMark05 and 3DMark06 tests (according to standard procedure), but neither of them were able to produce results. But this was expected, because this machine is not meant to be benchmarked by those utilities in the first place.

ACi looks like a company on verge of folding, with hardly any market share- it would be quite dicey to buy a laptop from them.

This ACI UMPC has a fatal flaw, small screen !!- too much real estate is lost on sides of display -it needs a 9 inch screen a ka the Eee PC 900. Also the HDD though 120 GB will be a real slow down factor. I, like lots of other ppl will wait for the $ 499 Eee 900 PC on a new Intel Atom processor-fast 12 GB SSD drive, running fast win xp.

You have hit nail on head mr vijayshimla. when tested factually-this UMPC will come out virtually worthless- slow processor plus slow hard disc. ACI needs a good product adviser like you- to identify what will sell and what will not- this one is a dud.
