Gameplay and Combat
The combat is very similar to that in other turn-based games; if you've never played one, it can be difficult. A turn-based game is like chess; you decide a move and attack and then execute, and so does the enemy, until one finally kills the other.
There is a ring building system that is unique to Lost Odyssey. Every character can pick up various elemental rings throughout the game; these rings can be found in crates, by killing enemies, and so on. Two elemental rings can be combined to form a new ring that does massive amounts of damage to the enemy.

There are close to a hundred rings found throughout the game, and combining them to get different results can be quite intriguing. The rings can be equipped anytime during battle, so you can experiment a lot. You'll find a lot of magic as well -- every party member has different kinds of magic. The magic system works on elemental properties as well: Earth-Wind-Fire-Water, very basic and easy to use.
There is also a combat ring that is present during battle. Every time you execute a combat move, a large ring will appear on the screen. While executing the attack a smaller ring will start forming; your objective is to hit the attack button at the right time so that the smaller ring fits right into the larger combat ring on the screen. If you time it correctly, the result of this mini-game leads to more damage to your standard attack. The combat is decent and will keep you entertained.
