Most of us grew up playing games on the 8-bit consoles - games that are today considered vintage digital art. I hope gamers will agree when I call these games digital art: these are games that made weekends special, these are games that were used as bait to make us score better in school, these are games that fulfilled our childhood fantasies - which included slaying dragons, riding sports cars, and rescuing scantily-dressed princesses (or was I the only one?).

I still play these games on various emulators on my PC; nothing beats stress like a two-player co-op session of Double Dragon. In this feature, I'll talk about popular characters from the pre-gen era, characters who slew dragons, drove fast cars, and rescued scantily-dressed princesses.

This time round, we take a little peek into the world of Mario. There are a few references from Wikipedia, because unlike some of my sharper readers, I don't remember all of Mario's stats, including the number of his appearances in various games... read on!

He has a hard fist. When he jumps and breaks bricks, he's using his fist, not his head. One thing I still remember is the intention to skip going up the creeper from level 4 to level 8. I would get stuck somewhere in a level that looked like it had no ending. I never actually managed to solve it. The best enemy I think are the ones with a black helmet-like cap and the tortoises throwing sticks!

Correction! Mario doesn't have a hard head. He has a hard fist. When he jumps and breaks bricks, he's using his fist, not his head.
