Features

The Iomega eGo is available in 2 capacities -- 160GB and 250GB. It supports plug-and-play via its USB 2.0 interface, thus supporting transfer rates of up to 480Mbps (theoretically). It's also backward compatible with older USB1.1 ports.

The data transfer cable consists of the now-standardized mini-USB port at one end.



The other end consists of 2 USB connectors. Under sufficient power supply conditions, only one of the connectors is required to perform data transfers. But there are times when one USB port is not able to supply enough power to the drive. This generally occurs with USB hubs or USB ports placed in the front-side of the cabinet. Thus, in such a scenario, the second USB connector can be used to supply extra power to the drive.

Other than that, the eGo also has a DC 5V power port in case external power is required. There's no adapter bundled with the package though.



Another feature that Iomega proudly states is their patent pending 'DropGuard' feature that claims to make the drive withstand the toughest of environments and accidental drops of up to 51 inches.

Lastly, the bundle also includes the license to the 'Secure EMC Retrospect HD' software which is used for file backups. The software needs to be downloaded from the Internet.

The eGo is equally comfortable working with Windows PC as well as Macs.

These Drives are GR8...We have roughly about 150 Units of these EGO purchased till date for last 8 Months. We have other brands also here , but felt these are more stable. EMC Software is outstanding & heard Iomega & EMC are same company. Unfortunate 160GB was out of stocks , could any one help out where to get 160GB , Need about 40 Units more . Iomega says only 250 & 320 are available. Any one having old stocks in any parts of India? or any drop in price for 250GB.

LoL. 1st joke: 11 grands for 160 gb. Second joke: eGo drive is much better then most branded drives. Have you used seagate freeagent's ceedo software. What about buffalo software, it actually boosts the data transfer speeds visibily. I wouldnt complain about dropguard. I doubt your distributors even let you do that, sadly. Does it vibrate under load? Does it heat under load after sometime? I will give credit for reviewer for putting up the hd tach scores but would have been great if compared with other drives.

First of all, I don't think you've used an Iomega product in your life. Second, Asking the reviewer whether he has used ceedo does not make you a better reviewer. Have you used Retrospect?Third, show me a buffalo HDD. What you are talking about is for buffalo flash drives. Fourth, if you look at the HD tach scores, you can see that the avg read speed is 31-32 mbps. This means that the casing is of good quality. Many casings give between 25-30 Mbps speeds if you're lucky. Moreover the casing is far better looking and sturdy than the plastic WD and seagate(worst looking) casings. Lastly, look at the price again. It's 11K for the 250GB version.

Ramesh, First of all, it doesnt take a guy's 1% of his brain with basic pricing knowledge to figure out that 160gb for 11k is a joke....in any case-irrespective of which company's external drive it is. You get 500gb seagate pro freeagent for 6k, why on earth will anyone go for this company which seems to be having a reputation as same as an iball. Third, in countries like India, after sales support and value for money does make a big difference, which some indian reviewers lack to comment on-which gives me an upper hand from these user reviews. I rather pick up a buffalo/Western digital/seagate anyday. When people buy a hard drive they see these things-after sales, warranty, does is heat during load, transfer speed, length of the cable, bundled software and the reliability of the hard drive. External hard drives arent made to be displayed at fashion shows, they are meant to be as light as possible and small enough to occupy less amount of space.

Please do not jump to responding without reading what I've written. 11k is for 250GB and not 160GB. I agree that the pricing is atrocious but you keep making the mistake of saying 11k is for 160GB. Iomega is not iBall. It is an unfair..no wait a non-comparison. Iomega products are really good but quite pricey. You have a point on good after sales and other features that a user would want, but when you say that drives are meant to be light and small, any factory made external 2.5 inch drive does not come close to a laptop drive put inside a cheap casing. Such a config has the smallest footprint. But, to be safe, a little bulk definitely helps for protection., And I'm sure the Iomega offers much better protection than WD..and seagate...it's a cheap plastic casing with an ugly slant(for no reason) and bright irritating light. It's bulky without offering any protection.

To add, visually I can tell that the cable is of high quality. I don't think either WD or Seagate provide such a good cable. But, I have no idea on how good Iomega's warranty is.

Since i would be carrying it around quite a bit, i would prefer my portable storage to be extra-sturdy. Storage using flash memory would be the ultimate choice, but i think it will take some few more years to see flash in these humongous capacities commercially available. Till that time, devices such as these which have been 'drop'-tested are ideal. What do you say folks?
