The day of the Hybrid GPU is dawning upon us. This concept simply involves the integrated working of an onboard GPU and a dedicated graphics card in a computer. They can either work simultaneously to give a boost in performance or can be used singularly -- the motive being to conserve energy -- depending upon the requirements. Takers for this technology include laptops -- where more battery life is always appreciated. And these laptops would still have all the firepower to cater to today's growing graphics processing needs. The newly introduced Sony Vaio SZ is a working example of this method. It has an Intel X3100 onboard graphics chipset alongside a powerful nVidia GeForce 8400M GPU. It has the ability to toggle between these GPUs depending upon the graphics requirements.

Meanwhile, AMD seems to be applying this technique in their future products, too. Touted as hybrid CrossFire, they recently showed off a PC running with an ATi onboard GPU and an ATi dedicated graphics card simultaneously. While testing recent games, they found a respectable 20 fps boost while running under hybrid mode.

AMD is planning for the entry-level hybrid CrossFire-capable cards to be available at a modest price of USD 50 (Rs.2,000) onwards.
