We generally remember 2001 as the year of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America. Almost a month later, amidst the chaos, something happened to the portable music player industry. 2001 was also the year Apple Inc. released their flagship portable digital audio player. It was christened as the 'iPod'. And the rest is history

Apple surely did not invent the MP3 player (the Digital Audio Player, to be precise). A handful of them were already selling in the market from as early as 1998. So what made the iPod, the 'best-selling digital audio player' till date (11.9 crore units and counting)? What does the iPod have that other players out there don't? I try to find the answers to these questions in my review of the 3rd generation Apple iPod Nano.

To tell you the truth, I had never really used an iPod before; until I started with my review unit for these past few days. So this article has a non-iPod-er's perspective to the whole iPod phenomenon.

Just to caution all potential iPod buyers - great product but post sales service is non existent. Bought a nano iPod from P3 in Great India Place, NOIDA. Did not work from Day One. P3 says that they will have it repaired. Apple says that if needed, they will replace with a refurbished piece. So, here I am, having bought a brand new iPod - will have to settle for a repaired piece or a refurbished replacement. Extremely disappointing

HI Rohan, have a 2GB iPod which is giving problems, screen becomes blank when switched on. I tried 'Restore' from iTunes, but didnt help. No problem with battery, I think must be a virus attack or software corrupted. Where can I find an authorised Apple Service Centre in Pune who can sort out this problem?? I stay in Pashan.

I just need a good mp3 player with decent colored screen to browse songs/playlist. I dont want any video or pictures support. Instead i want : - FM - quality ear phones - batterylife - direct folder support and play - voice recorder + inbuilt mic - sd card support (optional) - atleast 8GB of FLASH memory the older nano looks fine, the new nano is for those who want video too. I dont see a point to see video on a tiny screen. I enjoy videos on my 4.5 inch PMP, but i feel 7 inch (PMP) is for those with addiction for movies. I would buy anything but an iPod, coz it overpriced (for me), lacks features, you have to buy FM, etc.

I dont think you have ever had an opportunity to use a cowon or an iRiver. If this can "blow you away", probably you should try the cowon or iRivers in a hospital.. Be it video, audio or other, these players are waaaaaaaay better than iPods.. Exceptional audio quality, if you get a better set of earphones. Easy of use and design are probably the only fortes of iPod. And well, 6.5 mm looks real fancy but personally, I see it as a pain to handle such devices

I have the 30 GB version that was available (for a bomb) before this last version came out. I think the new earphones are infact a great improvement over the first one--not in terms of sound (both are as good) but in terms of great fit; the new ones snuggle into your ear and stay there--I think the reviewer has clearly noticed that! And with rising affordability, the iPod is one of the best players around.

Well you name it or blame it iTunes is not just for iPod can be used in standalone or with AppleTV. It has other features like back-up.

I use the ipod nano and have found it most entertaining; I would like to transfer content of my dvd to ipod; dvd ripping software is scarce.

I don't see you going into the cons of this player. I too am an owner of a 4GB 2G Nano, but still, there are some places where improvement is possible. And...the 3G Nano, is not as good as the 2G one. Video on a tiny screen is not as appealing as on a Touch or a Classic. And the form factor of the 2G was better, as it was less wide.
