Summary
The plot is very strong and will surprise you from the start itself. I will not spoil the surprise for you, go buy the game for that. Initial surprises aside, you are Altair -- a guy with a really cool name that sounds even better when it is said out loud, the name means "the flying one" in Arabic.

Your job is to assassinate whoever the Hashshashin sect commands you to assassinate; you are their pawn in a politically and religiously challenged world. The game commences with you on a mission to retrieve an important artifact for your sect. While on mission, you kill an innocent man and as per the rules of the sect, you aren't supposed to do so. Your comrades tell you to calm down and follow the mission objectives, but Altair is obsessive and arrogant and will listen to no one. His attitude could give the bad prince from the Prince of Persia series a run for his money. Altair encounters a man called Robert de Sable, a powerful member of the Templar Knights. Altair foolishly confronts him and fails, leaving his comrades behind. The Templar Knights follow him to his hideout and attack, killing many. Although he fights and saves the village, he's demoted to a novice and your objective is to gain back your rank by killing nine vital targets. This is the basic plot, the rest is a just great writing.
