    Maxtor Drives Shipped with a Virus

    No doubt Seagate has moved quickly to stop further such drives from leaving the Chinese facility, yet some infected drives may already have found their way into the hands of unsuspecting customers.

Be warned, those who've purchased Seagate's Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 products between now and August this year.

Kaspersky Labs has alerted Seagate to the existence of a virus found in at least one of these products. Seagate has investigated, and found that an undisclosed number of drives produced by a Chinese sub-contract manufacturer might have gone out with a virus, "Virus.Win32.AutoRun.ah", on them.

No doubt Seagate has moved quickly to stop further such drives from leaving the Chinese facility, yet some infected drives may already have found their way into the hands of unsuspecting customers.

So how do you know if you've bought an infected drive? Keep the serial number of your Seagate Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 product ready before you call Seagate customer support at:

Meanwhile, Kaspersky Labs has identified "Virus.Win32.AutoRun.ah" as a molar virus that searches for passwords to online games, and sends them to a server located in China. The virus also deletes other molar viruses, and can disable virus detection software.

The games affected include: WSGame; 91.com; QQ; Woool; rxjh.17game.com; TianLongBaBu; AskTao; Perfect World (Wanmei Shijie); and World of Warcraft.

Strange! HDD's ship in Un formatted condition. A person installing a new HDD would delete any exixting Partion and recreate partions as per his/her likings. Where does Virus come in??
