    Building a PC under 20K Version: 10.07

Diwali is just round the corner. So here's this guide before schedule -- just for you.

I wrote an article on buying a sub 20K PC some 4 months back. I generally repeat the budget once every 6 months. But given the growing number of requests for an encore, and with Diwali just round the corner, here we go sooner than that. Let's check if anything has changed in the past 4 months.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (Rs.3,000)

Back then, we included a dual core CPU in a sub-20K config for the first time. This time we opt for the Athlon 64 X2 4000+. It has 2 cores running at 2.1 GHz -- with 512 KB of L2 cache each. Rs.3,000 is a great price for a CPU running at that speed.

Motherboard: Jetway M2A692-GDG (Rs.3,150)

We'll continue with the same Jetway motherboard that we used in June. Based on AMD's 690G chipset, this board offers excellent value for money -- thanks to its good performance and excellent feature set. Other than a good integrated display based on the x1250, the board features 1 IDE connector, 4 SATA2 ports, 4 DIMM slots for DDR2 RAM, 1 PCI Express x16 slot, 2 PCI slots, 8-channel audio, loads of USB ports, and more. To keep the cost down, Jetway has done away with the HDMI port that you'd generally find on 690G motherboards. As of now, I don't see a need for that unless you plan to connect your PC to an HDTV. In that case, pay a grand more and opt for the MSI K9AGM2-FIH board with an HDMI port onboard.

I opine that buying a assembled pc is a criminal wastage of time, money and time.MNC's like HP,DELL have come with excellent specifications attractive pricing too!!!

I opine that manikumar is a marketing slave for a big MNC. Maybe Dell, since it's HQ'ed in Chennai. If people didn't save money getting PCs assembled, the market for them wouldn't EXIST. And not to mention the jerk-around that the wretched corporate callcentres make you go through, before you can get even the simplest of things done. With certain honourable exceptions like APC, support is awful in all companies. Better to be able to call up the dealer directly and yell at him when problems crop up. Moron.

Cabinet, Mouse, Keyboard & Speakers must be of iBall. No one else can match their quality & technology.

iBalls are good, but they are the best is an debateable. The Quality levels of Microsoft and Logitec devices are much more and they have a good brand recall. iBall is not upto these even by a large margin....

Actually I would have 100% agreed with you a few years ago. But I found iball mice at least better than either Logitech or Microsoft. Their keyboards and other stuff are a completely different matter however. No one iball stuff unless buying a mouse.

As someone using mice, keyboards and speakers for 15 years, I can definitely say that iBall mice, keyboards and speakers are sub-par. stick with Logitech for the mice and TVS Gold for the keyboards.

okay we got the PC going. Now how about doing a review on Printers(the best VFM AIO). lowest cost per page for colour/B&W, good scanning and all that jazz.

Hey Ameya, Nice config. But in my opinion, when someone will buy a pc below 20k, it will purely be for value and very basic work. So why not a 15" LCD instead of a 17" CRT. Saves space and similairly priced.

Techtree should start improving their standard and not do a PC buying guide just for name sake. The description is just too short and takes a lot of things for granted from the readers. Or is it just me who thinks this way? I recently stumbled on this new website who did a similar buying guide and they were a bit more thoughtful for choosing ASUS motherboards, Zebronics cabinet, LG optical drive and Altec Lansing speakers (just like someone else pointed out, nice choice of brands) hxxp://priceguru.in/archives/monthly-guides/935/7 (Replace xx with tt)

i guess, it is only you who thinks this way but i agree that the descriptions were too short and i would select some other brand for few components.

A review of sub 50k laptops is long overdue. Of course, Dell always emerges as the winner in value-for-money models

nice low-mainstream specs, good job ameya, instead you must have tried some other mobo instead of Jetway because of its non availability in the indian market. other brands such as asus, msi, gigabyte could have done better at the same price. else everything is great for a starter.

nice confiiguration as always.but i would go for LG 20x dvd drive considering lite on has poor after sales service.also Artis 111r has inbuilt FM radio so i would stick to that.
