Wipro has become the first Indian company to establish a virtual brand presence, along with the launch of its "Innovation Isle" in the popular and populous (virtual) world of 'Second Life'.

"Innovation Isle" is only the first of several phases to follow in Wipro's overall development in 'Second Life', the company said.

The Offshore Development Center or ODC model campus currently launched boasts facilities such as: client engagement centers, learning centers, three-floor set-up complete with cubicles, security desk at the campus entrance, amphitheater, media hall, basketball and volleyball courts, office facilities, data center, and a library.

Wipro's own 'avatars' will staff the ODC. Later on, Wipro intends to use the ODC to bring added new capabilities to its recruitment process. Initially, potential candidates will only be able to submit their resumes at the virtual campus. Eventually, the e-recruitment drive will be incorporated into the larger process.

Wipro said it is planning to do a lot more through 'Second Life' in upcoming phases, which includes: collaborating with customers and partners, hosting virtual conferences, and so on.

With a population of over 700,000 residents (across 100 countries) and counting, the wildly popular world of 'Second Life' has animated proxies or 'avatars' building homes, running businesses, driving their vehicles, frequenting nightclubs/malls/discotheques, et al.

Meanwhile, "Innovation Isle" has been created, and is being managed by the Wipro 'Gaming and Animation Center of Excellence' based out of Hyderabad.

I still don't understand the concept of 'Second Life' or the need for Wipro to establish themselves over there. Can anyone explain here?
