A New FIFA
In FIFA 08 the players feel slow compared to any other football simulation. This makes the game challenging even at amateur mode. I remember the first FIFA game I played was FIFA'99 (and I have played every FIFA since). None of the earlier FIFAs required so much attention to get your basic controls right. The controls aren't hard to control -- the players are. It feels as if they're running with weights tied to their feet. Passing isn't an easy job; the defense latches on the ball like fingerprints to a glossy surface. The AI is very competent as well: it makes sure you sweat for your goal -- if at all you score any (after however many attempts). Let me walk you through the challenges: the second you start the game, the defense starts stalking you. The AI will tackle, put pressure on you, and make sure you don't get those short passes going.
After about 20 minutes, I started getting a few passes going and finally got some rhythm in my game. I was able to get a few good through passes to the wings and was ready for a wing-center-header combo -- a FIFA favorite. But, alas, the advanced AI made sure I was always under pressure; whenever I tried forcing the ball in the center with a lob that deceived the laws of physics and kinetic motion (in reference to the charging striker), my player lost balance, and the ball went nowhere near the goal. Sure, this used to happen even in FIFA in as early as 2006, but this time around, it feels genuine rather than scripted. Pre-FIFA 08, one could usually get away with a few minor dribbles and pass through the defense. But now, it'll take more than your average dribble.

The L2 button, along with the right analog stick, lets you create magic with the football. The new trick system will remind you of FIFA Street. (I'm referring to the control system and not the tricks.) The tricks are not unreal; in fact, you may have seen your favorite footballer do it on the real field. Learning the trick system is very important, as it'll open up a whole lot of options for you. Eventually, you'll make it through the defense and be one on one with the goalkeeper. You'll soon realize, though, that he isn't so easy to fool now. The keepers have improved, and they're now harder to score against. The ball physics remains pretty much the same.
Due to the increased difficulty, scoring a goal in FIFA 08 gives you immense satisfaction. You have to toil a lot to score a goal, but it'll eventually pay off. One interesting phenomenon: when after playing FIFA for a few hours I tried playing PES, the players seemed light as a feather. It took me about 20 minutes to get back the perfect PES feel.
