    Kodak Photo Printer 500

Sudeep Naik, Oct 18, 2007 1933 hrs IST

A style statement of a printer

Good build and design, Uses Dye Sublimation, Good features, Decent print quality

Loses details in landscape shots, Expensive to buy, Much higher cost of printing than the average photo lab

Design

The photo printer 500 weighs about 2.1 pounds (almost a kilo) and takes up just 12.17x7.40x3.27 inches space (with the tray installed). A plastic door in the front protects the insides from dust. But the rear enjoys no such luxury -- and is exposed.

A folding 3.5" LCD lays face down on the top panel. The Menu, Rotate, Slide Show, and Crop buttons are placed under the LCD.

A big Power button lies to the right of the LCD. The front of the printer houses the Paper and Color Cartridge status lights. Also, the 8-in-1 card reader and an SDIO slot for the optional WiFi card.

The Print button and the 4-way navigation keys (much like the D-Pad on a mobile phone) are placed on the front edge of the top panel. To the left is the Cancel button and the Bluetooth status light. The Red-Eye Reduction button and the Transfer button are placed to the right of the navigation keys.

The right side of the printer houses the color cartridge or the donor ribbon.

The paper tray is completely detachable and has a cover on top to protect the photo paper from dust.

Its a bit on the higher side. I feel I would get similar Epson products at a cheaper price.

The size restriction is a constraint. 4x6 prints are cheapest in labs or even in Snapfish. At home, as hobbyist, you may need to take occational printout for 5x7 ,8x10 or A4. You'll get a good all-in-one photoprinter at this price from deskjet ranges. Moreover, you can print documents as well in the deskjet. Who wants an exclusive photo printer at home, at this cost ? Even, considering the running cost, this is not an attractive proposition for commercial users also. Dye-sub Canon printers are available at half of its price. I'll personally look for reviews on dye-sub printers which supports bigger formats (e.g. Hi-Ti).
