    Airtel Rolls Out 8Mbps Broadband

Techtree News Staff, Oct 11, 2007 1633 hrs IST

Initially, the 8 Mbps Broadband service will be made available in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Delhi, and the NCR region.

    mail share

With the launch of its 8Mbps Broadband service, Airtel has become the first service provider in the country to offer such high speed Broadband.

Especially when existing Broadband speeds are not more than 256 KBps to 4Mbps.

With 8Mbps, Airtel Broadband customers will now be able to browse multiple windows even as they download heavy files, view streaming videos, enjoy online gaming, chat, email, and so on. Airtel claims customers will no longer need to wait for videos to get buffered while watching streaming videos.

Initially, the 8 Mbps Broadband service will be made available in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Delhi, and the NCR region, with a subsequent roll-out planned in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Airtel is working on price points for its offering, though prices are likely to be roughly in the region of Rs 2,000 per download (7 to 8 Gbs). Besides, for customers who do not want a 24-hour 8 Mbps speed, the company is working out other tariff plans to make the service available for shorter periods of time.

8mbps and 256kbps are like apples and oranges. So are the users of those speeds. I am into ForEx (Foreign Exchange) trading and because of 512 kbps I have to use TataIndicom also as the secondary internet connection and team up the adapters. I will gladly pay the INR 2000 (USD 55 @ INR 40 = USD 1). The packages are designed for all spectra not just one person, so choose what you want and can afford. In Chandigarh the Airtel speed is exceptionally good. The metros (Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Hyderabad, etc.) are internet exchanges thus providing cheaper bandwidth, and as providers go from bad to good to better, more bandwidth will become available at a cheaper price. Internet is India Is growing by leaps and bound if you consider that broadband penetration in the USA is barely above 25%. So wait, and get used to the faster speeds.

it is really foolish of oneself to believe in their stupidity..i think airtel should first sit and have a discussion whether they have the proper tech know-how to provide 8mbps and then should publish it in the market...i am using airtel broadband..but even to open google search i have to wait literally 1-3 minutes..then u can imagine how this trick will be ...its like old shit new bottle..new money making strategy..to hell with airtel and

Quiet right. They definetly take people for a ride. I have MTNL connection and have managed download speeds of 900+ Kbps on occasions. Airtel download speed sucks, not to mention the bills that follow! Yes, the broadband costs a lot more in India compared to US and UK. There is a lot to be desired in the cost aspect of it.

AN outright cheating!!!!!When Airtel's max speed is512Kbps at present a manifold jump is not possible. All ISPs use a conveniant catch called 'up to 2MBPS' , never more than the plani.e if you have opted for a plan256Kbps ,at the most you can get a speed of 200Kbps if you are really lucky!!!Another catch is download limit , more the speed less is the dl limit!!!!!So please be aware of all these things before venturing!!!!

The term quoted by one of the ISP (BSNL) is upto 2mbps but not 2MBPS. there is a difference. it is mega bits per second. Let us understand that this is the speed between their server and users Modem. but not ene to end anywhere to anywhere else. I have occassions to measure 1667mbps upto server and 436kbps upto an international speed test site(not bsnl server). the site commnet is that it is a good spped compared to asian average of 412 or so. there cant be a better expectation than this. actually what we use for our down loads and other uses this speed is really GOOD, I feel. Even some friends who return from US after a visit, comment that this is good.

Yeah....its a goood think to do with Indian Internet connection. Actually here in India internet connection is five times the cost that is available in US or UK. Here people aren't able to even get 128KBPS unlimited connection as it's priced at Rs.699/- PM where as in US 2MBPS unlimited connection is available for $25 i.e. Rs.1100/- PM & moreover Indian ISP's don't know that doubling the internet connection speed won't just double Cost. So i think this 8MBPS internet connection here in India would cost 32000/-($760)PM then who will be able to get this connection, it would be costing a months salary!!!

Hi Guys..too many ppl commenting about the net speeds..interesting forum..thought can probably put in my 2 cents..I m using 5Net in South Mumbai with rocking speeds due to good delivery of bandwidth throughput. I m using a 3gb account which offers 3gb of data trnsfr in a month with nights and Sundays free..I gross about 30(min)-60(max)Gb's of data transfer every month at speeds close to 1Mbps after 11pm(they advertise max speed of 300Kbps!!)..All in all I m very satisfied with 5Net. Their local distributor "Ahura Net" is just awesome customer service..queries if any resolved in 24hrs flat(max)..simply amazing..anyone in South Mumbai requires true broadband experience should try n contact Ahura Net...

i wld like to bring one very important thing to ur notice. ever heard of the CERT? or Project Carnivore? if u havent, stop reading this coment rite nw. if u have heard of the CERT or project Carnivore, then i dnt have nethng else to say dan this, that inspite of being a national carrier, its only BSNL, the only national and most technologically backwards an widout ne CC so to speak off, the only ISP in the country which isnt partner to either CERT or Project Carnivore. i have tried all possible isps in western and northern region of India, and trust me. each and every1 of them is aligned with carnivore and is easily accesible by CERT if they wanna check ur records. a simple ip ping and ip config hash will confirm this if ur using these isps... Kudos to BSNL for not bowing down to the tyranny of copyright laws and international morons. MPAA, up ur a**! BSNL rules simply for this reason that whatever u do on the net on ur personal private pc, remains in ur personal prvate life , unaccesible to any friggin morons and idiots hell bent on controling the net. Try any other isp and u compromise on ur privacy.. but if ur just another of those morons who think the internet is just for orkutting and downloadin porn, den go 4 ne other isp u may wish 4.... dats wat suits u. :D

k, a little update from Delhi. For the last 2-3 days Airtel has changed its policies.Earlier in the plans speed used to nearly double at night from 12 to 6, now they have done away with it. Not just that where the speed used to be between 26-31 kbps in a 256 Kbps plan ,it has now come down by atleast 25 percent and at times falls below 18-20 kbps averaging at 22 Kbps. The customer care can only acknowledge these facts with helplessness.

Ok Folks, read all the posts till now, all i would say is that no one is forcing you to opt for this plan, we should appreciate the initiative Airtel is taking else for such flexible bandwidth one would need a Frame Relay which would burn a big hole in your pocket... Donno how many of you use Video Conferencing with VoIP at home, but those who know what i'm talking about will agree that this kindda plan was much needed :-)

GR8 news, kudos to Airtel...Hope that they would give 8 mbps speed, practically. Whatever, still, Airtel will be proved to be a trendsetter in this field. If they get successful, many other brandnames will be jumping on the bandwagon and ultimately, the tariffs will be coming down substantially, so that every n every home wil be able to afford to have this large BW at their doorstep... and imagin, what may come next... vitual classrooms, virtual movie theaters ...for example......

Airtel is a big time rip-off. MTNL rules in Mumbai and delhi even if they have crappy cc and grumpy babu staff. I have a night unlimited up to 2Mbps speed (day limit is 1.25GB a month). during days speed hovers around 1 Mbps which is more than enough for email and surfing as i don't use it for much downloading. In night i get a constant speed of around 1.7Mbps. 700MB Linux live CDs just take 45 mins to download when i use utorrent. :-) monthly rental: Just rs 749

BSNL prices were low and forced other ISPs to reduce. However BSNL is struggling to complete the target set for this year, also called Broadband year.. so private ISP will prosper on the Gaint's fall and we may suffer with higher tariff in future..

Hi guys ...please don't blame BSNL , i think its the best in the country and in the world. My experience says that like me and many others are getting good speed in broadband and at same time they are watching movies online without buffering. All my friends are having more mbps line but speed is slow i.e due to sharing of line. I think in our country just trust on BSNL and please do n't go for other network. It will make hole in ur pocket by some other mean. I have taken and tasted all the broadband connection and finally stick to bsnl broadband and giving advice to all my friends what i ve written here. If u feel i am not correct then some time later u may feel that i ve made a wrong dicision.

Airtel will definitely have a catch like many other Indian companies. Have any of you heard of Tata Broadband's 9p-9a unlimited @ 2mbps offer? It's just Rs.99 more a month added onto any package that your using. And one doesn't have to unplug the modem or router, just log out & log back in. Voila..Unlimited at crazy speeds..sometimes you even get speeds upto 2.8 Mbps..thats a plan worth talkin about..somethin one can use. Beats MTNL don't it. Tata will soon catchup with Airtel and have even better plans. The first may not always be the best!!

Airtel Sucks. I have an airtel GPRS connection. It says link speed of 115.2 kbps... all i get is 0.01 to max 3.0 kbps (after 2pm night). One years has passed and there is NOT even a week when i did not complain to customer care regarding their gprs. They seldom have any REAL tech knowledge, and would call me back ONLY at that time when their network is working properly. Next day it is all the same again. I hope it's not like other Airtel hollow claims. I have rough experience with over hyped Airtel Data Cards where it failed to connect over VPN (Internet Connection was pathetically slow, less than 1 kbps) and their Technical Support staff admitted its inability, although when the dealer's engineer came to me for the first time to sell it, he was claiming it to be the best and that the one from Reliance is worthless. It proved otherwise. Still waiting on Airtel to get it back.

Why does the download limit have to be there ? Developed countries never have these limits (atleast in UK/US). A layman user will never know how much has been downloaded (other than claimed downloaded by the company). Cant our service providers just give speeds and remove the download limits. It makes internet surfing messsy wheere you constantly have to worry about the data downloaded. Anwyays more than half is just wasted in popups and advertisements on any websites. Common telecom cos, the package which really gives unlimited download, is the actual package offered by you. The other packages offered are just to fool common people and attract them. Whew ....

I feel Airtel provides one of the best Broadband services. The provide the minimal assured speeds. Mr. Ramesh, your ignorance of the internet speed terminologies has made you make the above statement. Note the small 'b' in 256 kbps whereas it is capital 'B' - 40kBps which appears in your downloads. Connection speed is in general said in bit rate whereas download speed are in terms of byte rate. To put in a nutshell, if you get 40 kBps during your download, then you get 320 kbps (since 1 byte = 8 bits)..
Prakash

I think that Rs. 2000 for an 8GB download is exorbitant. Using a slow 256 Kbps line, one can download 8 GB in less than a week and BSNL's unlimited scheme is just Rs. 900 p.m.
