One of the newbies is a sleek Black Zune with an 80GB hard drive, and a bright 3.2-inches screen, which comes with premium headphones.
Microsoft has unveiled two new models of its Zune digital media player, along with a redesigned Marketplace online store and software.
One of the newbies is a sleek Black Zune with an 80GB hard drive, and a bright 3.2-inches screen, which comes with premium headphones. The other is an ultra-portable 4GB Zune.
Both models feature: the new Zune Pad, an innovative, touch-sensitive button for navigating the device; and wireless sync, which allows the device to automatically sync with the collection on one's PC via a home wireless network, and start automatically when placed in the dock or plugged-in to charge.
Users will be able to share full-length songs, albums, play lists, pictures, and even audio podcasts from one device to another; while the new software will automatically import broadcast content recorded on Microsoft Windows Media Center for Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate.
The redesigned Zune Marketplace will offer a selection of more than 1 million DRM-free MP3s that can be played with any digital media player. The Marketplace will initially launch with a collection of thousands of music videos, and over 1,000 of the top audio and video podcasts, available free-of-charge.
The new Zunes include built-in wireless features, an FM tuner, and a bright color display. They feature distinctive new menus, and a customizable background screen for giving that personal edge.
The brand new Zunes are scheduled to go on sale in mid-November. The 80GB hard drive model will be priced at $249.99 and the ultra-portable 4GB model will be available for $149.99.
Additionally, Microsoft has unveiled an 8GB Flash model of Zune, which will be available for $199.99.
For owners of original Zunes, their devices will be automatically updated with all new features and software designs by this Fall.
All said, it's difficult not to imagine that Microsoft's move is after all inspired by rival Apple Computer's recent revamp of its entire line of iPods.
And in its enthusiasm to promote the Zune vis-a-vis the iPod, Redmond is also launching 'Zune Social', an online beta community Web site for sharing similar music tastes, knowledge, and experiences.
Here, members will be able to create free, customizable 'Zune Cards' that will automatically update to reflect the music they are listening to, etc.
