Design & Build

The W580i we received was the Urban Grey color option. (It also comes in Style White, Boulevard Black, and Metro Pink.) It's a neat all-matt finish. Being the same design as the S500i, its build quality is just as good. The W580i has a large 2-inch display with support for 240x320 pixels resolution. The screen is crisp and sharp. It's a slim slider and lightweight at 94 grams. It's the same 5-way D-Pad - though the menu buttons and the buttons around it are different in design. The other noticeable difference in the D-Pad is the imprinting of the Play/Pause and Forward and Backward icons on it. The rest remains the same, which means that I felt the similar uneasiness in using the D-Pad, which I faced while using the S500i. There's a Walkman button and an Activity Menu button on either side of the D-Pad. These are round in shape and comfortable to use.

Slide open the W580i - and the brushed metal keypad comes into view. The keypad is like a cutout from a metal studded belt. Being of the same design, the keypad won't be comfortable for people with large fingers - and one can't rule out the strain factor for the W580i. The keypad is well lit by a light blue backlight. Turn the phone around to see its 2MP camera surrounded by an abstract skin.

The left side of the phone has the volume control, and the right side has the Sony Ericsson proprietary multi connector. Flashing lights, also seen in the S500i, occupy the rest of the sides of this Walkman.

The power button is at the top left of the phone just on the edge. The top of the phone also has the phone's M2 memory card slot, which has a hard plastic dust cover. The cover is too fragile, which if handled badly, will break.
