Microsoft has now decided to extend the selling period for its Windows XP operating system (OS) till the end of June 2008.

This is significant because earlier on, the company had said it would stop selling Windows XP in January next year.

The company has also said it intends extending sales of its basic Windows XP Starter Edition (meant for low cost PCs) up until June 30, 2010.

Previously, the software major had announced plans to discontinue selling of Windows XP licenses to PC manufacturers beginning January 2008 -- subsequent to the launch of its newest operating system, Windows Vista.

Microsoft claims its decision to extend sales of Windows XP is based on the feedback received from PC manufacturers that there is still a high degree of demand among consumers for the operating system, given the prevailing dissatisfaction with Vista.

When Microsoft had first announced the cut-off date for stopping sales of its Windows XP OS, consumers had voiced concerns over Vista being incompatible with most software programs and devices. Also that Vista required significant hardware upgrades to be able to run on older PCs.

Typically, Microsoft follows a 4-year product cycle wherein an older version of a product continues to be available for up to 2 years of the launch of a newer version.

Microsoft is now saying that since Windows Vista was launched a good 5 years after the launch of Windows XP, they were initially in a hurry to pull-the-plug on the older operating system as soon as possible.

Obviously, priorities have since changed...

Linux, or Mac OS, it's the only viable long term solution. Microshaft wants to control computing.

they discontinued win95 after win98, then win98 after winME, somehow WinXP shoud not be discontinued, because Vista is resource hogging and slower than XP, even its not hardware compatible to most computer users, i saw Vista Home Basic running on a good spec laptop, it was running like snail even after a fresh install. so they should keep XP, until Vista goes easy on operating, compatibility, stability and usability terms.

isn't that wonderful? cho chweet! the gates gang is actually paying heed to their consumers! bullshit of course. they are just making sure their monopoly in OS remains locked. especially in countries like india where the mac os or linux / open source os are not exactly making dents in ms sales.
