Losing a cell phone or someone stealing the same is a very common problem. Buying a new piece seems to be the only way out in midst of the heartbreak. Incidentally, BPL Mobile seems to have a better solution on offer in form of Ultimate Mobile Tracker (UMT).
UMT is a software application that claims to help you track and even recover your lost mobile phone. All one needs to do is install the application on your phone and enter two alternate recipient numbers, where you wish to be notified incase your phone is stolen, and enable the Mobile Tracker. BPL Mobile maintains that the application will always stay active in the background without hampering the performance or making any changes in the phone's Operating System (OS).
Explaining how the UMT application works, this is what BPL Mobile had to say:
In case your phone is stolen and the application detects any change of SIM card, 2 SMS will be immediately fired to the two alternate recipient numbers which had been entered during the setup. These messages will be sent by the OS directly through the kernel, without any notification on the mobile screen. The thief will be unaware that he is being tracked.
The messages will be sent periodically every 60 minutes making sure to the owner that the phone is active and helping him to trace the thief. The application, in short, will not lock or damage the phone making it unusable to the thief. If the phone becomes unusable, the thief might damage it or discard it and the phone will never be recovered back. In order to prevent this, the application will smartly allow the thief to use the phone and at the same time will discreetly keep tracking him to the owner. The application icon will be hidden and the thief will be unaware of existence of any such application. He will not be able to disable or uninstall it either.
Earlier this year, Samsung had embedded a similar tracking mechanism in their phones. Now through BPL Mobile, mobile tracking will be made available on a larger variety of phones. UMT is built using the SYMBIAN OS and is expected to be compatible with all SYMBIAN OS phones. One needs to visit a BPL Mobile Gallery to get the application installed.
The UMT is available for Rs. 149 one time fee. Customers with not be charged any monthly rentals for the same thereafter.
hey what if d new sim dosent have balance ? How will d application send sms?
And in a few operators like airtel they send d details of money deducted after ever sms n call. So wouldent d thief (if smart) understand tat therz sumting suspicious? And if d person is kinda professional then he wud no bout this security more that common ppl....
So firmware update n all r other factors....
What if the thief replaces the firmware ( OS ) of the phone which can be easily done at any mobile repairing center. Will this not affect the software? Kindly help me in this concern.
If this works after firmware updation too then it will be best system. Kindly reply..
Well still some questions remain unanswered... What if the Thief Removes the SIM card but Doesnt Put another one... I.e Keeps the mobile Switched off & later sells it as a second hand phone to someone Else?? I am assuming that the software will send the SMS as soon as the new owner Puts his SIM... so then Wouldn't he have to bear the Brunt?? Also as "get_saif" has Written below, what If the true owner deliberately changes the SIM card by choosing another Provider??? Does this mean we only have to stick to one Service provider per handset!!!! I hope not....
do this application cause a privacy problem to its original owner also when thesoftware is infected with a virus. Do the person who stolen the mobile note that his prepaid credit is lowering due to the msgs sent?
