Policing in the country is looking upbeat -- thanks to the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) recently updating its Web site (www.bprd.gov.in) with contact details of police stations across the country.

The Web site now has co-ordinates of police stations in 6 states and 4 union territories -- which includes postal addresses, phone numbers, and fax numbers. Besides, residential contacts of police station in-charges are listed on the Web site.

And the site boasts contacts of offices of assistant police commissioners and deputy superintendents of police of the respective areas. Some police stations have provided their email ids on the site.

Kiran Bedi, director general of BPRD, expressed the view that this is a beginning to get police stations connected through the Internet, and will improve connectivity and access, making policing in the country transparent.

BPRD said the site will soon give contact details of police stations in the remaining states and union territories of the country.

And while we can only hope such a move will actually bring in transparency into the system, for the Mumbaikar, he/she already has access to the Mumbai Police Web site at www.mumbaipolice.org.

The Web site offers telephone and fax numbers of all 84 police stations that come under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai police. It gives contacts of the offices of Mumbai Police Commissioner, Joint Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners of Police, and Additional Commissioners of Police. And caters to information regarding passport status, crime in the city, safety tips to senior citizens, and so on.
