Rockstar Games' controversial "Manhunt 2", which became the first game in over 10 years to be banned by the British Board of Film Censors (BBFC), has reportedly risen like a phoenix from the ashes to go on sale in the US on October 31 (Halloween).
BBFC had refused to give any age rating to the 'brutally violent' game. Rockstar even filed an appeal asking the Video Appeals Committee to overturn BBFC's decision.
According to reports, publisher Take-Two Interactive Software has now said that a reworked version of the game featuring a mental asylum escapee engaging in gruesome killings has been given a 'Mature' rating by the US Entertainment Software Ratings Board -- which means the game is okay for people aged 17-years and above.
The board had previously slapped an 'Adults Only' rating on the game. And while its decisions don't have any legal bearing, game console makers Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo do not allow games with such titles on their consoles.
Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, voiced the view that 'Manhunt 2' is important to them, and that they are glad it can finally be appreciated as a gaming experience. Houser described the game as 'a powerful piece of interactive story telling', and said horror fans would love it.
The reworked "Manhunt 2" will release on the PS2, PSP handheld, and the Wii.
Meanwhile, Take-Two isn't saying whether the reworked game has been submitted for review in Britain and Ireland where it's banned from going on sale.
