In the face of stiff competition from social networks such as MySpace, YouTube, and Facebook, Yahoo! has announced adding new features to Yahoo! Mail in a bid to make it more of a social experience.

A key difference is the way Yahoo! Mail users will now have more ways to reach out to friends and online contacts by trading messages with mobile phone users.

Yahoo! plans to add the new email-to-phone connection to its email service in the coming few weeks.

The new version Yahoo! Mail gives users three options to communicate with contacts; namely, email, online instant messaging, and text messaging to mobile phone users. Users can switch between the three depending on which is most convenient.

For starters, text messaging will be available only to Yahoo! Mail members in the US, Canada, India, and the Philippines. To text a contact, users need to enter the mobile phone number, type a text message in Yahoo! Mail, and hit send.

Other key differences in the new email service include: how it lets users drag and drop email into folders, speeding up the process of sorting incoming messages.

Search features are also improved allowing users narrow down results to specific sender, folder, date, attachment type, or message status. For instance, search can now find all photos in Yahoo! Mail tagged with a particular person's name.

Particularly in the US, Yahoo! Mail will detect dates, addresses and proper names, and allow users link quickly to Yahoo! Calendar, Yahoo! Maps, or Yahoo! Search for that data. Meanwhile, the look-up feature is optional and can be turned off.

Yahoo! plans to make its new and improved mail the standard option for all new users of the free service. The company will upgrade users worldwide over a six-week period, it said.

Meanwhile, existing users will be prompted to upgrade, although users of slower dial-up connections or those comfortable with Yahoo's 'classic' e-mail can continue to use the older version.

As competition from social networks hots-up, Yahoo! is scrambling to make it's services more relevant to users.
