With spiralling incidence of cyber crime in the capital, newly appointed police commissioner, Y S Dadwal, has reportedly asked the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) to investigate these cases. Which is all very well, except that the latter is now saying it is not prepared for the extra task thanks to an already overburdened staff.

It was earlier this month that Dadwal said they are planning to introduce a single window mechanism under the EOW for investigating all cases of cyber crime.

Meanwhile, Dadwal's suggestion hasn't found favor with top officials at the EOW, who've voiced the view that they are already overburdened with unsolved cyber crime cases, and that they do not have the kind of resources or support staff to handle the increase in volume.

The officials have pointed out that despite the sharp increase in the number of cyber crime cases, most of them go unreported -- mainly due
to police personnel's inability to understand the matter.

The officials have said trained experts are needed to fight the new type of crime.

As per statistics available, the number of Internet subscribers has risen substantially in the past six months. But alongside, the number of cases related to hacking, obscenity, e-commerce fraud, and other Internet crimes has also risen significantly.

According to the numbers available with Delhi police itself, a total of 17 such cases were registered last year, up from the 12 registered in 2005 (nearly a 42 percent rise).

I had been a victim of fraud and Police at my place refused to accept the matter and register a FIR, nither I was able to get response from all the so called big media giants and not even any cyber crime cells in India. Crime has a right to prosper in India where the country sleeps including the law and order and police.

There are umpteen number of Nigerians who in the name of others, are duping innocent people on the net by offering enticements in some form or the other. If one out of 100 fall in their trap, they have achieved their nefarious means to defraud you. Police has no witherwithal to even encourage people to come forward in reporting their being so duped or attempted to be duped.
