Music For Your Ears

The game can be played in different modes like career, quick play, multiplayer, or online. Once you start the career mode, you will be asked to choose a band name and a character; it's all fictional, so don't worry, no Steven Tyler look-a-likes. After all the initial mumbo-jumbo is done, you can start playing the songs. There's a small entrance scene and then the game will zoom on the guitarist(you); in front of you is a table that will remind you of a pin-ball machine. There are 5 different color-tabs representing 5 different notes on the guitar. When the song starts, there will be scrolling buttons on each tab and you have to match that by pressing the right buttons on the controller. Any one of the screen shots should help you understand.

This may seem simple, but believe me, you can learn how to handle the AK-47 in CS faster than getting a 100% hit score in this game. You can start off with easy, and as you gradually progress to normal and then perhaps hard, as jumping into hard directly isn't quite possible, even if you are Joe Satriani. The game will test you and each new song will be different and a more difficult experience. The game will make you respect every guitarist on the planet as you will learn how difficult it can be.

In the career mode, you will progress from different sections, each consisting of 5 songs, you will have to beat 4 songs to progress. Everytime you play a song, you will be judged and rated for accuracy, or percentage of notes hissed and score. Every time you hit 10 straight notes without making a mistake, your score rating will double to a 2X; ten notes after that it will jump to a 3X and ultimately 4X, then it stops. But you can reach up to 8X by using something called StarPower. While playing the songs, there will be a particular set of note buttons that are highlighted with a star next to them. Hitting all the star notes will fill your starpower bar. So when ever you activate starpower, your current score multiplier will be doubled so a 4X will be an 8X. This will help you get a good rating and the higher the score the better for your overall career.

Multiplayer

There is co-op mode or you play against each other as well. In co-op, you and a friend will be able to choose between bass, lead or rhythm guitar, depending on the song. The rest is the same, but it's double the fun.

Final Verdict

This is a great game and will satisfy all game and music lovers. The game isn't easily available in India on the Xbox 360, but it has a few extra goodies on the Xbox that make it a good buy. The international copy comes with its own guitar, but here in India you will have to make do with the controller. The game will add weeks of fun for you and a friend, or can even be enjoyed by any family member, if they like rock. A suggestion - try to master this game alongwith learning the guitar. You'll most probably pro the instrument faster!
