Performance
The V1003's looks, feel and controls will make you want to go on a photo-click frenzy, but the quality of the shots might leave you dissatisfied.
The startup and shot-to-shot times were good. The quality of the pictures was above average with decent results in well-lit environments, indoors, or outdoors. The 2.5-inch LCD is good, but could have used slightly more pixels. The low light performance was below par, and most of the shots were washed out when using the flash.
The 10 MP shots weren't good enough when it came to skin tones, and in some cases color reproduction as well. The noise content on most of the images was higher than expected. Also, images clicked using ISO settings higher than ISO 400 had a lot of noise. And the Redeye reduction systems aren't up to the mark.
In fact, the V1003 works better when you bring the resolution down to 8.9 MP. At least the noise content is reduced to a certain extent and the images appear crispier, more like that in V803.
On the brighter side, the Kodak V1003 comes with loads of modes and shooting presets. Anyone new to using digital cameras would appreciate the use of these modes in different conditions. The Perfect Touch technology automatically corrects the brightness levels in the image and gives you an optimally processed image. It takes around 30-40 seconds for the camera to finish processing a 10 MP image, and it's quite worth the wait.
I also liked the Panorama mode because the end result is a stitched image composed from 3 back-to-back shots. The number of shots that can be stitched has come down from 4 (in the V803) to 3 (in the V1003). Maybe it's because 10 MP images put more load on the imaging processor. The final stitched images were perfect almost all the time. Mostly, it was the shots clicked without using a tripod that were a little misaligned. But, the camera did cover for slight changes in the angle of the shot.
Video
The video performance is below average, but offers the zoom function while shooting. There's one thing to note though, the A/V cable is not included in the bundle, therefore you'll have to buy it separately incase you plan to connect the cam to your TV.
Battery
The V1003 uses a proprietary KLIC-7003 battery that lasts for about 185 shots with minimal flash usage and reviewing of pictures. We were able to click around 150 shots with a fair amount of flash usage and reviewing of pictures. And since this camera uses a proprietary battery, getting a spare battery and a fast charger would be a good investment.
Conclusion
The Kodak EasyShare V1003 is available for Rs. 17,999 with a one-year warranty. Being a lifestyle product, a little premium is justified. But for a 10 MP camera, the performance is just average. And if you want a camera for clicking everyday pictures while making a cool style statement, the V803 is still the better bet.
